Birds of Peace in the City

In a small corner of Dien Hong park , facing Tran Huong Dao street , three beautifully decorated pigeon cages lie peacefully among rows of green trees . The flock of hundreds of pigeons , big and small , does not belong to any individual , but still flies around the park every day and makes friends with locals and tourists .They are part of Tuy Hoa City with the mission of sending messages of peace and security to everyone .

Photo: Contributor In 2022, Tuy Hoa City People's Committee deployed a pigeon raising model to add friendly colors to the city's tourism space, aiming to build an image of a peaceful and hospitable Tuy Hoa city. Currently, the Green Tree Team of Phu Yen Urban Environment Joint Stock Company is in charge of taking care of them. Mr. Phan Duc Quoc, Head of the Green Tree Team of this company, said: From the initial 10 pairs of parent birds, it has now developed into a flock of 150 birds. This is a breed of pigeon, so it is small, agile and easy to adapt to the natural environment in the city. The birds are fed 3 times a day; their drinking water and cage are also changed and cleaned regularly. Initially, when they heard the familiar calls of the caretakers, they would swoop down to eat. Gradually getting used to the people living around the area, they became more tame, and now they can take pictures with tourists. “These pigeons are friendly to humans. I put some food down and they immediately come over. Many even land on my hand. Since they arrived, the park has become more lively, and people's exercise has become more interesting,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa in Ward 2. Amidst the hustle and bustle of people and vehicles on the streets, seeing birds playing with people, some soaring and landing on trees, some hovering on the grass and flapping their wings to return to their nests, makes everyone feel warm. Ms. Pham Thi Trang in Hoa Tri commune (Phu Hoa district) said: “Sitting in the park to enjoy the cool breeze, seeing pigeons, my two children ran over to play. I thought the birds would fly away, but unexpectedly, just a few seconds later they and the children became friends. Now, every weekend when they have a day off from school, my two children ask to go to Tuy Hoa to feed the birds. According to Mr. Nguyen Khoa Khang, Head of the City's Urban Management Department, pigeons are a symbol of peace . Many large cities in and outside the country raise flocks of pigeons in the square to create liveliness for public spaces. “Although Tuy Hoa City has only been implementing this program for nearly 2 years, the birds have developed well and have begun to create positive effects for residents and tourists about a peaceful, friendly and affectionate city. This is one of the activities to concretize the Tuy Hoa City Party Committee's Action Program No. 10 on developing city tourism, creating attractive destinations for domestic and foreign tourists, so that Tuy Hoa is known as a livable city,” said Mr. Khang.
