The benefits of group running

VnExpressVnExpress10/11/2023

Mutual encouragement, wind protection, less chance of skipping out and safety are all benefits of running in a group.

Running in a group is one of the most effective strategies for forming and maintaining a running habit. Runner's World outlines eight benefits of running in a group, whether you're running with a friend, family member, or a group of "companions."

Less likely to skip a workout. Running in a group can provide purpose, fun, and help you make new and meaningful connections. This keeps you motivated to exercise and stick to your plan, both for yourself and the group, even when you’re feeling lazy, tired, or the weather isn’t cooperating. When you’re in a group, there’s no room for vague excuses.

Get advice. By running in a group, you can get helpful advice on style and training from more experienced runners. Conversely, you can also advise and motivate newbies or those who are not familiar with running.

Push each other. Running in a group gives you encouragement and support along the way. You’ll be more motivated to keep going and be accountable, as it’s harder to quit when you know others are waiting for you.

Windbreak. Running behind one or more runners will help you block the wind and maintain your pace for longer. It was also by running with a rotating group of pacers – who deflect some of the air resistance in a process called drafting – that the legendary Eliud Kipchoge finished the 2019 Vienna Marathon in 1:59:40.2 – becoming the first person to break the 2:00 barrier for the 42km distance.

Improve. Everyone improves with a little healthy competition. When you run with runners who push you to run faster and harder, you’ll find it easier to reach higher levels. When you run alone, you may be tempted to cut your workout short, but the pressure from your training partners will keep you going and even running more.

Avoid pointless competition. Running in a group can help you get out of the race mentality. Just because you run faster or better than others in practice doesn’t mean you’ll beat them in the race. Running in a group can save your energy for more important moments.

Networking. Running with strangers or friends, co-workers, clients, or even your boss is a great way to network and build professional relationships in a low-key way. You’ll develop close friendships with other runners that may be difficult to build in an office or other work environment. Building or strengthening relationships through running can lead to a new job or other opportunities.

Safety. Potential attackers or harassers are less likely to follow a group. You’re also less likely to get lost if you run in a group, and even if you take a wrong turn, you can find your way back together. And if someone in the group gets hurt or has any problems, there’s always someone else to help.
