Teachers in uniform

The classroom has a blue board and white chalk, but the special thing is that the teacher is in the People's Police uniform, while the students are in prisoner's clothes. That is the literacy class at Channel 7 Prison.

Special Class

The literacy class had 30 students, of different ages and learning abilities, but all were serious and diligent in their studies. The teacher that day was Major Truong The Anh - an officer of Sub-camp No. 1, Kenh 7 Prison. After graduating from a teacher training college, Major The Anh applied to teach on a contract at a junior high school near his home and after nearly a year, he has been working at Kenh 7 Prison until now.

Major The Anh shared: “The class is held every Saturday morning and afternoon. I prepare lesson plans that are appropriate to the level and learning ability of the prisoners. Older prisoners have a slow ability to concentrate and learn, requiring teachers to be patient in teaching. The goal is for them to be able to read, write, and do basic calculations to move towards vocational training.”

In addition to being responsible for teaching literacy, Major The Anh also teaches prisoners lessons on civic education , law and policy dissemination, life skills, and moral values. He also builds relationships with prisoners, always encouraging, comforting, and helping them during the rehabilitation process.

Prisoner LVC shared: “Before coming here, I was illiterate. Thanks to the prison management, I was able to attend a literacy class. Now I can read and write letters to my family. Although I still make spelling mistakes, I am happy because I can write down what I think. In my free time, I borrow books from the library to read and understand more things.”

Light up the faith for the lost lives

At Channel 7 Prison, there are classes without chalk, blackboards, or lesson plans, but only the dedicated guidance and education of special teachers. Directly managing and educating prisoners with all kinds of crimes and different sentences, the working environment of prison officers at Channel 7 Prison is always full of hardships and challenges.

New inmates are often confused and fearful, but the prison guards are always close to them and encourage them to comply with the regulations of the detention facility. Thanks to the attention of the supervisory board, the council of officers, and the prison guards of Channel 7 Prison, inmates can now improve their knowledge of life and law, and master some basic skills.

Having worked as a prison guard for more than 14 years, Major Le Van Tam - prison guard of Sub-camp No. 1, Kenh 7 Prison said: “The job of a prison guard is not only to guard prisoners but also to educate and reform prisoners, helping them think positively so that they can feel secure in their rehabilitation. Teaching prisoners to be good, to work and to appreciate the value of work is not simple, it requires prison guards to have a sense of responsibility, compassion and tolerance.”

To reform special students, the prison guards must be close, share and understand their thoughts and aspirations, thereby promptly encouraging them to comply with the reform regulations. The unit strictly implements policies for prisoners serving prison sentences; the work of considering special pardons ensures fairness, democracy and transparency; the work of considering reducing prison sentences is increasingly effective.

Lieutenant Colonel Vo Van Vu - Deputy Warden in charge of Kenh 7 Prison said: “The unit pays attention to and coordinates with related units to organize cultural classes and eliminate illiteracy for prisoners. Every year, the prison contacts schools to organize cultural classes and issue certificates to prisoners. The unit also coordinates with colleges to organize vocational classes such as electricity, car repair, etc. for prisoners to help them find jobs after serving their prison sentences. Over many years of implementation, the work of educating, reforming and training prisoners has achieved positive results, contributing to helping prisoners reintegrate into the community after serving their sentences.”
