Mistakes candidates should avoid

MATH SUBJECT: ROUNDING ERRORS, SUBJECTIVE MISTAKES

Mr. Duong Buu Loc, a specialist in charge of mathematics at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that in the 10th grade entrance exams, the mistakes students often make stem from overconfidence.

According to Mr. Loc, students often make calculation errors in simple problems, misunderstand the concept of error, have limited reading comprehension skills in real-world math problems, focus only on numbers, forget to find the keywords in the problem statement, and draw incorrect diagrams. Furthermore, even high-achieving students often make subjective mistakes by skipping steps in problem-solving. Therefore, Mr. Loc emphasized that the most important thing when doing math is for students to be careful and meticulous, ensuring accuracy at every step, both in method, explanation, and the final result.

Ninth-grade students in Ho Chi Minh City are preparing to take the 10th-grade entrance exam early next week.

Meanwhile, teacher Nguyen Tien Thuy, from the math department of Ha Huy Tap Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), said that during grading, students often lose points in rounding skills. For example, the question asks to round to the nearest whole number, the second decimal place, or the first decimal place, but many students round incorrectly, leading to a loss of points in the result.

In addition, question number 8 on plane geometry consists of 3 parts, where part a is basic knowledge, part b is low-level application, and part c is high-level application. Most students were able to answer part a, while the remaining two parts were used to differentiate students. Besides mastering the knowledge of theorems and properties to prove the problems, Ms. Tien Thuy reminded students to draw accurate diagrams. Even a small error in drawing the diagram will result in the loss of 3 points on the plane geometry question.

Avoid thinking that the longer the essay, the higher the score.

Regarding the Literature subject, Mr. Tran Tien Thanh, a specialist in charge of the subject at the Department of Education and Training, stated that for many years, students have often thought that grading the exam papers of students applying to specialized schools and classes would be more difficult than those of students applying to regular 10th grade classes. However, Mr. Thanh affirmed that the grading of 10th grade entrance exams is carried out according to the general regulations of the grading committee, following the answer key and scoring scale that has been unanimously agreed upon and approved by the entire committee. Examiners will not know whether the exam paper was from a student applying to a specialized school or a regular school, therefore there will be no question of "grading being more difficult."

Furthermore, for many years, students have consistently believed that question number 2 in the literary analysis section is more difficult than question number 1, making it harder to score points, so they often skip it and choose not to answer it. However, this is actually an open-ended question, allowing students to showcase their abilities rather than rote learning. In fact, this question can easily impress examiners if students demonstrate an independent perspective and express their personal opinions on a given issue. Their writing may not be eloquent, but if it is genuine and reflects their personal thoughts and impacts, they will already earn points for this part of the essay.

The literature expert also pointed out another mistake students make when writing essays: thinking that the longer the essay, the higher the score. "This is completely wrong. If a student writes at length but is rambling, lacks sufficient detail, and writes like a prose explanation, they will not only fail to get a high score but will also confuse the examiners when grading," Mr. Thanh said.

Levels of disciplinary action for violations in the examination room.

Reprimand: The candidate commits the offense of looking at another candidate's paper or exchanging papers with another candidate.

A warning will result in a 25% deduction from the total exam score if the candidate has already received a reprimand but continues to violate exam regulations at the reprimand level during the exam; exchanges answer sheets or scratch paper with other candidates; copies from other candidates or allows other candidates to copy from them.

Suspension from the exam: Candidates who have already received a warning but continue to violate exam regulations at the reprimand or warning level during the exam; bring prohibited items into the exam room; take the exam questions out of the exam room or receive answers from outside the exam room; write or draw on their answer sheet content unrelated to the exam; engage in aggressive behavior, threaten those responsible for the exam, or threaten other candidates.

He also noted that "predicting or guessing exam questions" is a very harmful approach during students' preparation for the literature exam. Many students believe that because a particular work or topic appeared on the exam last year, it won't appear this year. However, the Department of Education and Training has emphasized that the content of the 10th grade entrance exam is within the junior high school curriculum, primarily the 9th grade curriculum, so the exam could be based on any work or aspect of it. The orientation for this year's literature entrance exam will be highly "open-ended." Students need to focus on honing their skills and accumulating knowledge to best meet the requirements of the exam.

On the other hand, Mr. Thanh said that students are obsessed with the idea that the 10th grade entrance exam must be difficult, "must have many traps," leading to anxiety, stress, and pressure, which affects their performance. This is undesirable.

ENGLISH : PAY ATTENTION TO SPELLING, EVEN THE SMALLEST ERRORS

Mr. Tran Dinh Nguyen Lu, the specialist in charge of English, said that the knowledge tested in the English exam does not deviate from the textbook; the topics and themes are all content that students have already been introduced to during their studies. The exam will not focus heavily on grammar but will lean more towards skills and vocabulary.

However, students often perceive and think that the entrance exam is "very difficult." Therefore, instead of mastering vocabulary topics in textbooks, they spend a considerable amount of time and effort on complex grammar structure sections.

In addition, students often make mistakes when answering essay questions, such as in Word Forms/Sentence transformation. According to the rules, even a small spelling error will result in the complete loss of points for that question.
