Beyond simply switching to electric buses, Ho Chi Minh City is reviewing, strengthening, and upgrading its bus system, from infrastructure and operation to maintenance and training for managers, drivers, and service personnel. This requires a specific transition roadmap, combining technological research and appropriate financial models to ensure the city's objectives are met.
Currently, the city is soliciting public opinion on designs for bus shelters and stops suitable for different areas, such as those with limited sidewalk space, central areas, train stations, metro stations, commercial and tourist areas, squares, and areas with high passenger traffic, as well as locations with narrow spaces and limited width. Modernizing the bus shelter and stop system is a crucial step in the urban public transport modernization process, aiming to build a friendly, convenient bus network that effectively connects with the metro system and other forms of public passenger transport.

In recent times, the city has also promoted the use of green, environmentally friendly means of transportation such as bicycles and electric bicycles, connecting with buses, metro, and river buses. Specifically, the city has deployed 500 public bicycles and electric bicycles at 52 stations in the central area to serve the transportation needs of residents and tourists. In addition, the city is studying the issuance of a roadmap for the transition and policies to support the conversion of public passenger transport vehicles to electric and green energy buses, in line with the orientation of sustainable transportation development, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment. For the period 2026-2030, the estimated cost for the transition to green energy buses is 7,577 billion VND, of which the city budget will contribute 4,667 billion VND. The total annual subsidy for public transport is estimated at approximately 16,495.7 billion VND.
Regarding the need for vehicle ownership and commuting habits, city dwellers are gradually shifting towards green and fuel-efficient transportation options. Ms. Giao Linh, a resident of Long Binh ward, said: “In the urban area where I live, the free electric bus service connecting my home to the metro station has attracted many users. I use it frequently because it saves costs, is convenient, and allows me to do personal things while commuting.”
Ho Chi Minh City's efforts in building green transportation not only help alleviate environmental pressure but also affirm its pioneering spirit in fulfilling the government 's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
