Colombia's Foreign Ministry announced that it will immediately resume consular activities with the United States after the diplomatic crisis between the two countries is resolved.
The official announcement of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed satisfaction with the decision of the US Government to re-establish the activities of the consular section of the US Embassy in Bogota from January 31 and that Colombia will also resume issuing visas to US citizens.
The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also affirmed that it will guarantee the rights, national interests and dignity of the Colombian people and that meeting the needs of people at home and abroad is one of the priorities of the Colombian government.
Visa issuance at the US Embassy in Bogota has been suspended since January 27 as retaliation for Colombia's refusal to grant permission for two military planes carrying its citizens who were deported since January 26. According to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, the reason for the incident was the US's mistreatment of the deportees.
In retaliation, President Donald Trump also announced steep tariffs on imports from Colombia. However, tensions have been eased through diplomatic efforts by both sides.
