Multiple approaches to readers

Implementing the Project on developing reading culture in the community for the period 2021 - 2025, the Provincial Library has had many practical activities to reach a large number of readers. Specifically, the unit organizes annual activities on developing reading culture such as: Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day; Reading Culture Ambassador Contest; Children's Book Storytelling Contest; Lifelong Learning Week; quizzes, book learning, thematic talks, author - work introductions, launching reading movements and introducing books among union members and youth; organizing fun activities, physical games, instructing reading skills, studying, life skills interspersed with reading and borrowing activities during the week every summer... Having witnessed the above activities, we have noticed the excitement and enthusiasm of readers, especially young readers. “This summer, my mother took me to the Provincial Library to participate in the exciting Summer through the pages of books program. Here, I met many new friends; participated in physical games, intellectual games; and learned about interesting stories in books. Through that, I learned many more skills and felt more interested in reading books,” said Tuan Khoa (3rd grade student at Phuong Sai Primary School).

Along with the movement activities, Khanh Hoa Provincial Library also focuses on circulating books to the grassroots, especially in remote areas to serve the people. In the past 5 years, the book circulation activity has been promoted from the Provincial Library to libraries and reading rooms at the grassroots with 25 rotations, serving 140,132 readers. Thereby, partly meeting the reading needs of the people, especially ethnic minorities in the province.

In addition, to attract readers to libraries and reading rooms, the Provincial Library focuses on communication and propaganda in many forms, from direct propaganda at facilities and locations to communication in digital space through websites and social networks. The unit also closely coordinates with local authorities and organizations to spread the reading movement to the community, especially in rural and mountainous areas. The province's public library system has organized many experiential activities to develop reading culture such as: Book Festival; Pink Book Page Festival; storytelling competitions based on books, painting based on books... to help children and students at all levels form reading habits and skills. The unit also actively coordinates with schools to organize "Extracurricular Reading Hours" to guide book selection skills and effective reading methods; coordinates with teachers and writers to organize "learning while playing" classes to practice reading comprehension skills, writing presentations for children...

Improve the efficiency of the library system

According to Mr. Dinh Xuan Huong - Director of the Provincial Library, in recent times, reading culture development models have been widely deployed, suitable to the actual conditions of the locality, especially in remote areas. The number of readers participating in activities is increasing, awareness of the value of books, reading habits are gradually formed in the community, especially children. The mobile library model brings practical results, mobile service and book circulation are highly effective, gradually bringing reading culture to remote areas, areas with difficult economic conditions. Competitions, competitions, summer activities, experiential tours, lifelong learning activities... have become useful playgrounds, promoting the role of propaganda, raising awareness of reading culture in schools and communities, attracting more and more readers to participate.

However, compared to some indicators of the Project on developing reading culture in the community for the period 2021 - 2025, the material conditions in libraries and reading rooms at the grassroots level have not been properly invested; the source of books has not been supplemented in time, so it only reaches 0.4 copies of books/person (the target is 1 copy of book/person); there is no specialized mobile library vehicle, so the service of books at the grassroots level is still limited; the socialization of library activities is not high... Therefore, in order to improve the efficiency of the public library system, in the coming time, the Provincial Library needs to increase mobile service activities, thematic services, and organize creative experiential activities to attract readers. After the merger, the communal library system was rearranged, taking advantage of the existing facilities of cultural institutions to maintain reading points for people. The unit also needs to pay attention to building an electronic library, developing digital resources, popularizing audiobooks and e-books; digitizing geographical documents, actively collecting and creating local digital collections to serve people's study and research; meeting the quantity, quality and variety of books serving people in remote areas...

With the goal of striving for 80% of students; 20% of people in rural areas; 10% of people in areas with difficult socio-economic conditions to access and use information, knowledge and related services at public libraries, community learning centers..., Khanh Hoa Provincial Library needs to have many new solutions and ways to bring books to people more effectively.
