Every year, starting in early October of the lunar calendar, people in the Muong Thanh basin begin planting long-term vegetable crops, and in late November of the lunar calendar, they sow short-term crops (with a growth period of 30-45 days). However, compared to previous years, the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake 2025 is earlier. To ensure a sufficient supply of vegetables for the holiday, farmers are planting half a month earlier than in previous years. According to observations, this year farmers are growing a variety of vegetables such as kohlrabi, cauliflower, and various herbs. For root vegetables, due to their longer growth period, farmers are planting them starting in September of the lunar calendar.
Ms. Tran Duc Hien's family in Dai Thanh village, Noong Luong commune ( Dien Bien district) has 4,000 square meters of land for growing vegetables. Every year, at this time, Ms. Hien's family is busy tending to and fertilizing their crops. This year, they are growing some traditional vegetables with long growing periods, such as cabbage, zucchini, and beans. To ensure good growth and high yields, Ms. Hien's family is focusing on fertilizing and pest control these days. Hoping for good prices for the Tet holiday vegetables, so that her family can have a more comfortable Tet celebration, Ms. Hien shared: "Thanks to vegetable farming, my family has been able to support our two children through university for many years. For Tet vegetables, the price is usually higher than usual, so my family always pays close attention to planting and caring for them."

Thanh Hung commune is a large-scale vegetable farming area in Dien Bien district. The people have proactively applied science and technology and high-tech models to vegetable and fruit production. We visited the vegetable garden of Mr. Vu Dinh Cu in Viet Thanh village, Thanh Hung commune, just as he was starting up his automatic irrigation system. Mr. Cử shared: "My family grows vegetables year-round, especially focusing on the market before, during, and after the Lunar New Year. Currently, my family focuses on cultivating 1,000 square meters of herbs and spices such as scallions, cilantro, perilla, and parsley... As a household producing herbs and spices, mostly for raw consumption, my family pays close attention to ensuring safety and cleanliness. I have invested in an automatic irrigation system; the outstanding feature of this system is that it waters evenly and prevents the vegetables from being damaged. My family uses well water for irrigation instead of water from canals. Currently, the price of herbs and spices ranges from 10,000 to 15,000 VND/kg. With the area of land my family grows, I estimate that we will earn a profit of about 80-100 million VND per year."
Mr. Ngo Minh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Hung commune, said: "As a commune with flat, fertile land suitable for growing vegetables, we encourage farmers to intensify cultivation and increase crop yields, thereby increasing income per unit area. We encourage people to utilize garden land and single-crop rice paddy land to grow vegetables. To date, Thanh Hung commune has more than 160 hectares of land planted with vegetables, including tomatoes, kohlrabi, and various short-term herbs... In recent years, the local vegetable products have not only been sold within the district but also purchased by traders to serve markets inside and outside the province."

Dien Bien District is the largest vegetable and fruit producing area in the province, with over 720 hectares, concentrated in the communes of Thanh Hung, Pom Lot, and Noong Luong. Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Dien Bien District, said: Compared to previous years, this year's weather has not been very favorable for farmers, especially those growing vegetables for Tet (Lunar New Year), with prolonged hot and dry weather. However, overcoming the difficulties caused by the weather, farmers are still diligently caring for and fertilizing their vegetable gardens... hoping for a bountiful harvest and good prices this Tet season. Tet is the time of year with the highest vegetable consumption, so prices are higher, thus increasing farmers' income.

Working alongside farmers, the specialized agencies of Dien Bien district regularly monitor the area, directing communes to strengthen agricultural extension officers to inspect pest and disease situations and guide people in timely prevention and control. In addition, they are promoting propaganda and encouraging people to apply scientific advancements to production, creating clean, high-quality vegetables that are safe for the market and meet consumer demand during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
