People's Artist Bui Dinh Hac passed away at 6:30 p.m. on July 1, 2023, at the age of 90, at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Hanoi .

Sharing with VTC News reporter, director Bui Trung Hai - son of the late artist Bui Dinh Hac - said that he passed away after a stroke and pneumonia: "He had a stroke for many years, had difficulty walking, but was still clear-minded. On June 30, he felt cold and had a fever, so his family took him to the hospital. After that, the doctors diagnosed pneumonia, his indicators decreased rapidly and then he passed away."

People's Artist Bui Dinh Hac is one of the typical artists of the first generation of Vietnamese cinema. He has made great contributions to the development of national cinema, laying a solid foundation for the development of Vietnamese cinema today.

He directed the film Water to Bac Hung Hai in 1959, when he was only 25 years old. The film won the Gold Award at the Moscow Film Festival in 1959. This award was an important milestone for cinema as well as other art forms in Vietnam, as it was the first work of a Vietnamese art form to be awarded the Gold Award at a global art festival. This was also the opening work of his long creative career, with great and outstanding achievements.

People's Artist Bui Dinh Hac has won many major awards: 3 first prizes, 1 second prize at major international film festivals, 7 Golden Lotus awards, 1 Silver Lotus award at Vietnamese film festivals.

The films directed by Bui Dinh Hac are unique cinematic works that deeply move viewers: Water returns to Bac Hung Hai (1959), Anh Nguyen Van Troi lives forever (1964), Nguyen Van Troi (1966), The road to my mother's hometown (1971), Saigon in May 1975 (1975), Song for Uncle Ho (1978), Nguyen Ai Quoc comes to Lenin (1979), The road to the Fatherland (1980), Ho Chi Minh - Portrait of a man (1989), Hanoi - 12 Days and Nights (2002)...

With his outstanding achievements in the field of film composition, in 1984 he was awarded the title of People's Artist (first term) by the State. In 2007 he was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts for his 7 outstanding film works.

In addition, he is also a manager who has contributed a lot to the overall development of the film industry. He has held the following positions: Director of the Central Documentary Film Studio, Director of the Department of Cinema, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Cinema Association...

He passed away peacefully after a long battle with illness. His passing has left his family and colleagues in mourning.
