Phuong Thanh was born in 2001, from Hung Yen . She overcame more than 100 competitors in the audition round to win the opportunity to play the main role in the horror film. Ut Lan: The ghost who keeps the property.
In a conversation with VTC News, Phuong Thanh shared about the pressure of her first role as well as her feelings when being paired with "Vietnamese screen god" Quoc Truong.
Stiff when hearing the news of winning the role
- What chance brought Phuong Thanh to the female lead role in "Ut Lan: Oan linh tro cu"?
I am a content creator and love art. Once, while filming a casting clip for another project and posting it on social media, I was unexpectedly accepted by the crew. Ut Lan contacted for an audition. After 6 casting rounds over a month, I was selected.
When I received the news that I had won the role, I was both happy and nervous, and even stiff because I didn't know if it was true or not. It took me about a week to calm down and think about how to try to complete the role in the best way possible.
- This is your first time acting in a movie and taking on the main role, surely you will feel a lot of pressure?
My biggest pressure is to portray the character well. When I read the script, I realized that the role has many complex emotional scenes, heavy psychology, and requires depth. This is my first role, so the pressure is even greater.
Acting with many experienced people also makes me feel nervous, afraid that I can't keep up. However, with the horror genre or having to wear bad makeup, I don't mind. I'm always ready if it's needed for the role.
At first, I was very afraid of falling scenes, but after the director told me to just fall because someone would catch me, I was less worried and put all my effort into my performance. Thanks to the support of my colleagues in the crew, I was always able to maintain my emotions when acting.
The scene I remember most is with Mai Cat Vi at the end of the film. That day, both of them were sick, so they acted while crying and wiping their noses. With Mac Van Khoa, there were only happy memories. He was very funny, so before acting, I often had to go to a corner to calm down if I didn't want to burst out laughing while acting.
Quoc Truong has a strange attraction
- What about memories with Quoc Truong?
At first, I was quite shy because Quoc Truong often plays villains. The first time we met, he asked me: "What year were you born?", because he thought I was a child (laughs). Truong is friendly, funny, always takes the initiative to talk and makes his co-stars feel comfortable.
I thought he would be difficult to approach, but he was very likeable and brought positive energy to the whole team. He really has a strange energy that attracts people.
- Quoc Truong once said he was moved when acting with Phuong Thanh. So how did you feel when acting in a romantic scene with him?
To be honest, I was moved from the first time I met Quoc Truong. From the moment I knew I would be acting with him, I had to mentally prepare myself to see how I would act with him. At that time, I was very shy. Maybe because he was someone I liked, I would feel embarrassed when talking to him.
However, my feelings for Quoc Truong are only for a brother and an idol. I have watched many of his films so it is an honor to act with him.
In the movie, my character also has a slight crush on Truong's character, so my real-life emotions also help me act more naturally.

Phuong Thanh
- Quoc Truong is famous as a playboy actor in Vietnamese showbiz, how do you feel about his charm?
I think that is true because Mr. Truong does not need to do anything to exude charisma. Just a slight smile or a nod is enough to make others feel fluttered. Now I understand why he is often called by such titles (laughs).
- After the movie, how is your relationship?
We still keep in touch, occasionally chatting with each other via social networks. Mr. Truong also often invites the whole film crew to his restaurant. In both work and life, he is always a very cute co-star.
Not suitable for the title "Vietnamese screen muse"
- How did Phuong Thanh's path to becoming an actress go?
Until now, I still can't believe my first role came so quickly because I still have many shortcomings.
I graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts, majoring in graphic design. During my time in college, I worked as a model, acted in commercials, and participated in several short films, including roles without dialogue or pay, as long as I could act. I went to school during the day, filmed at night, and there were days when I slept less than 2 hours.
After becoming a content creator and having a stable following, my desire to connect with audiences through acting grew even greater. Therefore, I decided to study acting professionally.
I failed many castings, but I never gave up. When I was chosen for the main role in the movie Ut Lan , I frankly shared with the director that I was still inexperienced. Luckily, he still trusted me and wanted to keep my emotions honest for the character.
- When watching her first movie role, Phuong Thanh felt satisfied?
I was moved to tears. Even though my face in the movie was dirty and ugly, I still found it strangely beautiful. I know I still lack acting experience, but in some scenes, I still got goosebumps because I knew I tried my best. That gave me more motivation to learn and improve in the future.
- Is the title "jade girl" or "muse of Vietnamese cinema" the goal that Phuong Thanh wants to conquer when pursuing cinema?
I think I am not suitable for that title right now. What I want most is to be recognized as a talented actor. That is the first and most important goal. As for the title or the halo, if there is one, I believe it will come after I put in enough effort.
- Thank you Phuong Thanh for sharing!
