Coming to this profession is fate, continuing to do this profession is a choice.

In 1994, after leaving the gates of Hanoi University, Ms. Phuong wished to become a journalist. By fate, she was destined to become a noble and sacred teacher. Da Nang University of Foreign Languages is the school where the female lecturer laid the first bricks for hereducational career. It was also here that her love for the profession began to sprout.

At that time, in addition to teaching in class, Ms. Phuong also taught Vietnamese to foreigners. Most of her students were foreign businessmen who came to Vietnam to do business and establish economic relations, so the need to learn Vietnamese was very high.

After each class, the female lecturer often received many job offers with businesses with extremely attractive salaries. However, the pride of contributing her small efforts to the career of nurturing sweet fruits for life at that time made her refuse all of them.

The passion for the profession continued to burn in her heart, and in 2005, Ms. Phuong became a lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication. Here, she taught students, graduate students, and policy communication officers the subject of Oral Art (oral communication skills in propaganda work).

With the viewpoint of learning manners first, then learning knowledge, learning goes hand in hand with practice, Ms. Phuong always focuses on educating students not only in professional knowledge but also in life skills and professional ethics. Because she believes that, to become a good citizen, one must first train oneself to be a useful person to society.

Sending love to soldiers through lessons and trips

As a lecturer, Dr. Vu Thu Phuong not only devotes all her love to the career of educating people, but also has a special affection for the soldier's uniform.

She is fully aware of the great contributions and sacrifices of the armed forces, especially the border guards and navy – two units fighting at the forefront, shouldering the responsibility of protecting the peace of the mainland. Therefore, on every business trip, whenever she sees the green of the soldiers’ uniforms, Ms. Phuong will definitely visit.

Not stopping there, the female lecturer also organized to take her students on political and social field trips to border posts and remote naval areas, places that not everyone has the opportunity to visit.

“My students are trained to do policy communication work, it is very important for them to understand more about life and the nature of activities in society,” Ms. Phuong said, adding that it is not simply about the trips. Deep down, the female lecturer wants to convey her love for the Fatherland and the color of the soldier's uniform to her students, so that they can understand the sacrifices and hardships of soldiers on islands and borders.

And so, many trips were successfully organized by the female lecturer, later becoming beautiful memories cherished and cultivated in the hearts of teachers and students: trips to Naval Region 4 (Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa), Naval Region 1 (Hai Phong)...

When asked about the most memorable memory in her journey of teaching and leading students, Ms. Phuong did not hesitate to mention the political and social field trip to the border stations in Lang Son province, an unforgettable mark in her mind.

It was a 5-day trip of the K40 Policy Communication class, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda, which she was the head teacher. The class had 50 people, divided into 5 groups, assigned to separate border posts. All were located in remote areas of Lang Son province. Here, students had the opportunity to study and work with soldiers in the management area, carry out propaganda work, disseminate education and law.

After finishing their day's tasks, the students will return to the station to rest. Then, with encouragement from their homeroom teacher, they will move together to visit the border posts at night.

At 10pm in November, the bitter cold and the remoteness of the mountains and forests could not stop the teacher and students from overcoming the difficult roads to reach the soldiers guarding the checkpoints.

“When they saw us coming, the soldiers there were very emotional. They said they had never had anyone come to visit them before. An indescribable feeling welled up in my heart, and I choked up as I gave the soldiers cups of tea, boxes of tea, and green bean cakes,” the female lecturer recalled.

The candles symbolize happiness and warmth from the rear sent to the front line, the tea helps the soldiers stay awake to carry out their duties and the green bean cakes bring the sweet taste of home. The gifts, though small, are full of the feelings of the teachers and students sent to the soldiers, hoping that they will maintain their spirit and successfully complete their sacred mission.

According to the female lecturer, the short 5 days of living and working with the border guards of Lang Son province brought her and the students valuable lessons about patriotism, responsibility and awareness of protecting territorial sovereignty, which not all textbooks can teach.

After the trip, many students kept in touch and even returned to celebrate Tet with the officers and soldiers. On the graduation day of the 40th Policy Communication class, the border guards, despite their busy work, did not forget to send emotional messages to their teachers and students.

“The trip ended, but the feelings between the two sides remained, which is something very precious,” Ms. Phuong said happily.

Happiness when the boats reach the shore of knowledge

On the vast ocean of knowledge, Dr. Vu Hoai Phuong has led countless ships to the open sea. Many generations of students she nurtured have now grown up and asserted themselves in many different positions.

Many students, even while still in school, under her encouragement, also have professional activities for the community: fundraising, going to remote areas to give gifts, paving schoolyards, building toilets and lighting for disadvantaged residential areas...

The female lecturer believes that the maturity of students through each activity is a priceless gift to her, becoming a source of inspiration and energy for her to continue organizing trips for the next generation of students. “ The greatest happiness of a teacher is to see her students gradually progress and mature. There will be no more meaningful and lasting gift than when they leave school, have a stable job, and become good citizens for society,” Ms. Phuong expressed.

Despite her busy work schedule, having to teach students and postgraduates at the school and participate in professional training courses for local officials, the lecturer never feels tired. Because each class and each business trip has now become a source of fuel to heat up her enthusiasm, lighting the fire of her profession in her heart to burn brighter and more brightly.

Passionate, responsible, energetic and creative are what Dr. Dinh Thi Thanh Tam, Deputy Head of the Department of Propaganda, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda, commented about Dr. Vu Hoai Phuong.

Luckily, as a student, being guided by Ms. Phuong from the first days of entering university, and later becoming colleagues at the same old school, Dr. Tam appreciates even more the valuable lessons that his old teacher brought to him.

“After many years of working, Ms. Phuong has always maintained her energy and enthusiasm, especially her ability to inspire, not only Journalism students, but also many generations of students in other educational environments. She is an ideal model of a lecturer who loves and is passionate about her job,” Dr. Tam expressed. With her abundant energy and positive attitude, she always receives affection from her students and colleagues.
