On the morning of July 11, VicePresident Vo Thi Anh Xuan received social activist and the first female astronaut of Vietnamese origin to fly into space, Amanda Nguyen.
At the reception, Amanda Nguyen handed over Vietnamese lotus seeds received from the Vietnam Space Center (VNSC) to be brought into space on flight NS-31 on April 14.
169 lotus seeds (Nelumbo nucifera) were selected from the Center for Research and Development of Flowers and Ornamental Plants under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences to accompany Amanda Nguyen on her journey beyond Earth.
The journey of 169 lotus seeds into space is even more meaningful when it bears the mark of the Vietnam Space Center, with the name "lotus" reminiscent of LOTUSat-1 - Vietnam's first radar satellite, demonstrating the nation's spirit of reaching out in the space age.

After receiving the lotus seeds, the Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC) will implement a research plan and spread scientific values to the community, especially the youth, to inspire a passion for space exploration. These lotus seeds will return from the mission to open up research on the effects of space on growth, contributing to plant science and space exploration.
Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan congratulated Amanda Nguyen on her success in space flight as well as her social activities.
The Vice President hopes that Amanda Nguyen will continue to acquire advanced knowledge to apply and contribute to the country's development in the era of national growth while promoting cooperation between the two countries.
Ms. Vo Thi Anh Xuan also hopes that Amanda Nguyen will participate in exchange activities between the two countries' young generations to inspire young people and women. At the same time, she wishes Amanda Nguyen more success in the future and always maintain the character of a Vietnamese woman.
Amanda Nguyen, 34, graduated from Harvard University and interned at NASA in 2013. She then worked at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, then served as deputy White House liaison at the US State Department.
In November 2014, Amanda founded RISE, a non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting the civil rights of survivors of sexual assault.
In 2019, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to fight for the rights of victims of sexual assault.
