A remarkable leap forward
Despite once facing electricity shortages (in 1992, only 35% of households had access to electricity), the power and energy industry in the coastal areas of the province has shown remarkable progress. Specifically, between 2021 and 2025, this region is expected to see the completion and operation of six more wind power plants with a total capacity of 234.2 MW.
Thus, by mid-2025, this area will have 47 power plants in operation with a total capacity of approximately 6,480 MW and a designed electricity output of about 31 billion kWh/year. This includes: 4 thermal power plants belonging to the Vinh Tan Power Center (total capacity 4,284 MW), 7 hydropower plants (819.5 MW), 35 renewable energy power plants (9 wind power plants and 26 solar power plants with a total capacity of 1,366.08 MW), and 1 diesel power plant (10 MW) in the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone.
Regarding the transmission grid system, the power sector has also focused on new investments or renovation and upgrading in recent years. Currently, the area operates 639.27 km of 500 kV lines, one 500 kV Vinh Tan substation with a capacity of 1,800 MVA, 301.15 km of 220 kV lines and five 220 kV substations with a capacity of 1,750 MVA, along with 724.59 km of 110 kV lines and 14 110 kV substations with a total capacity of 1,305 MVA. Simultaneously, investments have been made in nearly 7,030 km of 22 kV medium-voltage lines, over 3,510 km of low-voltage lines, and 29,051 22/0.4 kV distribution substations with a total capacity of 3,161.38 MVA.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the investment in constructing power generation and transmission systems has adequately met the electricity needs for production, business, and daily life of the people. In particular, the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone now ensures safe, continuous, and stable electricity supply 24/7…

Continue to promote development
The coastal area of the province is considered to have some of the highest potential for wind and solar energy in the country, with average wind and sunshine hours higher than the average in southern provinces and cities. Meanwhile, high and stable wind speeds and solar radiation also create favorable conditions for exploiting the energy industry, especially renewable energy – one of the main drivers of local industrial development.
In the near future, the development of power generation and transmission projects in the coastal areas of the province will continue according to the plan. Besides the synchronized deployment of the transmission and distribution grid system, the locality is also focusing on creating favorable conditions for the early implementation of projects in the Son My gas-power chain (Son My I, Son My II, Son My LNG terminal)… It is known that, according to the Power Development Plan VIII, the Implementation Plan VIII, and the Adjustment of Power Development Plan VIII approved by the Prime Minister , it is expected that by 2035, an additional 51 power generation projects with a total capacity of nearly 8,600 MW will be developed in this area. Furthermore, with its outstanding advantages in offshore wind power, the locality also requests that the competent authorities prioritize the consideration and approval of projects to effectively exploit the potential…
With the total existing and projected power capacity mentioned above, the completion of the investment will enhance the fulfillment of the local socio -economic development goals and plans for the new period.
Currently, with a total capacity of approximately 6,480 MW (accounting for about 8.6% of the national power generation capacity) and a transmission and distribution grid system that has been invested in and put into operation synchronously, the coastal area of the province not only makes a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of the locality but also helps ensure electricity supply for the key economic region of the South as well as national energy security…
