Dressing modestly is... hard to breathe
On many student forums, the topic of some universities banning students from wearing short skirts, see-through shirts, revealing shirts, and brightly colored hair has recently attracted the attention of students.
Many people believe that it is necessary for universities to have regulations on school uniforms. This will help students to have more control over their dress code to suit the school environment.

However, at the university level, many opinions say that schools should only give notice as a reminder, there is no need to include regulations of handling and punishment. This will create a feeling of constraint and bondage for students and many will find ways to... cope.
Le Thanh Thao, 20 years old, a marketing student at a private school in Ho Chi Minh City, said that the school she attends does not have specific regulations regarding dress requirements for students.
Students can freely wear whatever they like, whatever they want, in all styles and genres. At school, there are always bold, unconventional or new variations of clothing… as a way for students to express their personalities.
Thao said that female students wearing extremely short skirts, or strapless shirts, or tank tops is not an unusual sight. The outfits are very familiar in today's life, not unique or outstanding.
Le Thanh Thao admits that she is a person who likes to dress loosely, addicted to the style of short skirts with tank tops, combined with boots or terrorist shoes that really flatter her figure. Not to mention, wearing that way makes her feel free, comfortable, as if she has liberated herself. Whenever Thao wears conservative clothes, she feels... suffocated, having difficulty breathing.
The second-year female student said that if her school had a rule prohibiting short skirts and revealing shirts, she would find a way to dress her own way.
"If the school bans short skirts and revealing shirts, I will still dress the way I want. When the school takes a tougher stance, I will deal with it by temporarily wearing a full-body dress over it to "cover my eyes," she said.
Thao added that she likes to dress loosely but that doesn't mean she likes to be ridiculous. Her academic results are still good, she still communicates politely with adults, and is sociable with friends...
"Maybe each type of university and each training major has different requirements. But for me, universities have strict regulations on student dress code. Nowadays, prohibiting students from dyeing their hair in bright colors is... too frustrating!", Thao expressed her opinion.
Schools ban it, but students keep wearing it?
In fact, although many schools have strict dress codes, students still have many ways to cope.
Schools forbid, but students wear whatever they want. Especially in universities, the learning methods and models are not directly managed like in high school, and there is no department to directly check whether students are wearing the right clothes or not.
The principal of a university in Ho Chi Minh City shared that the dress code is mainly for students to pay attention to how to dress politely and appropriately, not for inspection or handling.
Recently, when Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education reiterated the dress code for men to tuck their shirts in and for women to not wear short skirts when going to school, a student immediately asked: "Does our school have a red star?"
That partly shows that there is an unavoidable gap between university dress code requirements and student implementation.

Many years ago, there was a university in Ho Chi Minh City that required students to wear shirts and collared T-shirts to school. But when entering the school, it was not difficult to see students wearing collarless T-shirts.
Ms. Nguyen Le Ai, manager of a personal training school in Ho Chi Minh City, said that external expressions such as walking, talking, dressing, speaking style... clearly reflect each person's thoughts and abilities.
This person emphasized that young people nowadays are very innovative in both their clothing and thinking. Sometimes we cannot explain why young people like to dress in that style, which can lead to biased judgments and assessments.
According to Ms. Ai, clothing always needs to be appropriate, but schools should not be too rigid, and need a certain amount of openness for students to explore and discover their own style. If the rules are restrictive and unreasonable, students will find ways to cope...
