Do Phuong Nga (born in 2003, from Phu Tho) is a former student of Foreign Language High School, Hanoi National University. Recalling a special moment in her life, Nga excitedly told about the moment she received the notice of winning a 100% scholarship to study in Australia just 2 hours after the interview on May 5, 2021.
It is known that the Russian scholarship interview takes place online and is limited to 10 to 15 minutes of presentation. At first, the female student was quite worried because the interview was not long but she had many ideas to present.
Before that, to better understand the values that Australian universities aim for, Nga went to the information pages of the schools she applied to to learn and see the list of values that the schools pursue, from there creating her own message that matches the school to show in the interview. "Actually, all the information we need to understand foreign universities is on the web, the only difference is how to filter the information," Nga said.
The interview took place online, so Nga had difficulty expressing her body language or confidence. During the short 15-minute interview with 4 questions from the lecturer, Nga had prepared answers for all the questions and scheduled the time to answer in advance, so she could present in 15 minutes. Phuong Nga also set a general rule that when speaking, she would not move too much so that the listener would not worry about her words, and occasionally open her palms to create a sense of closeness.
Phuong Nga is pretty, active and always sets "iron" discipline for herself. |
According to Nga's experience, interviews for Australian university scholarships will mainly ask questions directly related to the major you want to pursue and your future career plans.
When asked “Why did you choose to study marketing ?”, Phuong Nga chose to talk about the impact that brands can bring through the messages they convey in their communication campaigns. And she focused on the message of women's empowerment. “I still remember right after I answered that question, the interviewer had a pretty positive reaction and said that this was also one of the values that the school pursues,” Nga said.
Nga believes that a secret to “scoring points” in the eyes of the admissions board is to help them understand what their own values have in common with the values of the school. “On each school’s website, there is a mention of the values the school pursues, so we can read through that part and come up with ideas for the answer in advance. But we should absolutely not rewrite the entire answer, even if the question is exactly the same as our prediction, we should not reread the entire answer we have prepared,” Nga shared.
Right after the interview, 2 hours later, the female student born in the 10s received a call from the study abroad consulting center with the announcement that she had been awarded a 100% scholarship to study Marketing & Business Analytics at La Trobe University, Australia. "I was very surprised because normally, the results will be announced about 1 week after the interview. My case is an exception," the female student said.
During the interview with the Australian admissions board, Phuong Nga also impressed with an IELTS score of 8.0 ; SAT score of 1540/1600. The female student also emphasized that giving a natural answer and interacting with the examiner is equally important as the content of her answer.
Phuong Nga and mother. |
After hearing the news that her daughter had received the scholarship right after the short interview, Phuong Nga's mother was overwhelmed with happiness and realized that it was indeed a worthy result for Nga. Ms. Dang Thi Minh Trang (born in 1971, Phuong Nga's mother) excitedly said: "Nga is quite modest, has a high sense of self-study and research, has conquered her dream high school and is now studying abroad in Australia."
Before that, Nga had heard her parents talk a lot about Australia, so when she had the intention of studying abroad, she thought of Australia first. In grade 11, the female student began to build a study strategy and prepare scholarship applications. On average, she studied and participated in extracurricular activities about 12 hours a day. She also set a rule of having one day off completely after each final exam, the remaining days were spent studying, participating in extracurricular activities, taking exams, or building relationships.
“During the 3 years of high school, Nga lived independently in Hanoi and planned her own studies, took international certification exams to apply for scholarships to study abroad. Her parents did not interfere in any of her extracurricular activities or studies. Even when Nga received a scholarship, she showed her parents her certificates of merit for the 3 years of high school,” Nga’s mother added.
Phuong Nga has lived away from her family since grade 10, so when she went to study abroad, she adapted quite quickly and became highly independent. |
Studying in an environment like Foreign Language Specialized High School, Nga admits that she also had to have a competitive spirit to get proud scores like a 12th grade GPA of 9.7.
“In grade 10, I only achieved a GPA of 9.2, so from grade 11, I was determined to increase my GPA by 0.1 each semester. Thanks to that, my score went from 9.4 in the first semester of grade 11 to 9.5 in the second semester of grade 11 and then to 9.7 in the second semester of grade 12. I think setting small goals to conquer gradually will motivate me to try harder instead of setting a goal that is too big and giving up after a short time because I feel too much pressure or it is too difficult to make a leap forward,” the female student shared.
Vu Ha Chau (born in 2003, a student at the Foreign Language Specialized High School) also found Phuong Nga to be a friend who is always diligent, progressive in her studies and inspires those around her. “Nga always takes advantage of every opportunity, makes the most of her study time to get high scores and achieve her goal of studying abroad in Australia. In terms of extracurricular activities, Nga is also very active, enthusiastically participating in school events, so she is always loved by her friends and teachers,” said Ha Chau.
