Female medical student wins English speaking contest

On May 17, surpassing hundreds of contestants, the 10 most outstanding young people entered the final round of the English speaking contest "Speak Up for Sustainability", held at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Ho Chi Minh City. This contest is one of the activities within the framework of the 10th Student Festival with Foreign Languages ​​in 2025.

An excellent female medical student won an English speaking contest with the topic of planting mangroves along the coast of Myanmar.

The jury of the contest includes: Mr. Chaturon Thiphhiansak - Deputy General Director of SCG Vietnam Co., Ltd.; Dr. Nguyen Tuan Khanh - lecturer of the Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-HCM); MSc. Pham Ngoc Phuong Anh - 1st Runner-up of Miss Vietnam 2020, lecturer of RMIT International University.

In the final round, contestants will act as representatives of ASEAN countries and present their country's problems and solutions, aiming at the goals of sustainable development and common development of the region and the world .

With the topic of planting mangrove forests along the coast of Myanmar, Phung Hanh Thao, a fourth-year medical student at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, won the special prize worth 15 million VND.

"Myanmar ranks 7th in deforestation in the world, mainly due to people cutting down trees for fuel. That's why I have the idea of ​​planting mangrove forests along the coast, combined with placing solar panels on the water surface. This not only absorbs CO2, prevents flooding but also helps stabilize the marine ecosystem. People can also get energy from solar panels for aquaculture" - Thao shared.

Phung Hanh Thao is a 4th year student majoring in general medicine at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Ho Chi Minh City.

The female student's captivating speech at the final round of the competition

This female student said that she has had a passion for English public speaking since her high school years, and she practices improving this language every day. Because she is in the process of doing an internship, Thao only has 1 day to come up with ideas and design the presentation.

Unable to hide her surprise and emotion, Thao continued: "The night before, I was quite worried because the contestants were all very good. However, when I participated, debated and discussed with other contestants, I felt much happier. Most importantly, everyone had memorable experiences together. I was very surprised when I won such a high prize."

In addition to the ability to speak English fluently, finalists must convince the judges with good topics, critical thinking skills, presentation style...

The first prize of the contest went to Chau Hoang Thien Bao, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-HCM); the second prize went to Tran Nguyen Thanh Hai, University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology, HCMC; the third prize went to Tran Duy Nhat Tien, University of Technical Education, HCMC. The remaining contestants won consolation prizes.
