Power workers maintain power lines during hot weather
On July 9, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) provided information that in the first half of 2025, the total electricity production and import output of the entire system reached 155.79 billion kWh.
The power source structure shows that coal-fired thermal power still accounts for the largest proportion (84.6 billion kWh, equivalent to 54.3%), followed by hydropower (23.4%), renewable energy (13.5%), gas turbines (6.6%) and imported electricity (2.1%). In the renewable group, solar power reached 13.63 billion kWh, wind power 6.71 billion kWh.
Notably, solar and wind power have now supplied nearly 21 billion kWh, growing steadily despite the lack of a new pricing mechanism for transitional wind and solar power projects. While gas turbines are shrinking in proportion due to high fuel costs, renewable energy sources continue to play an important role in ensuring national energy security, especially during peak consumption periods.
Currently, the North is entering the peak of the rainy and flood season and the flood season has begun in the Central region. EVN is coordinating with the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company (NSMO - under the Ministry of Industry and Trade ) to optimally exploit multi-purpose hydropower reservoirs. Hydropower plants will be "stretched" to balance electricity demand with flood prevention requirements, ensure dam safety and stable operation of the entire system.
