A video of sewage leaking from the ceiling at "America's busiest airport" went viral on August 4.
The clip, recorded by a passenger named Jamaal Carlos, left viewers "chilling" with the scene of murky water violently gushing from a broken ceiling panel at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Georgia.
Sewage poured down like rain because the airport ceiling collapsed, passengers covered their noses because of the stench (Video source: Mail).
The sudden incident left many passengers in the area in shock. Some even had to cover their noses to avoid the strong stench coming from the water.
Carlos said the incident happened while he was waiting for a delayed flight from Atlanta to Dallas, Texas. “While we were waiting, water suddenly poured down from the ceiling and kept flowing for about 10 to 15 seconds, then it got worse and worse. The ceiling collapsed and the smell was terrible,” he recalled.
According to this passenger, he also saw debris falling from the ceiling. According to passengers' observations, it took about 5 to 10 minutes for airport staff to arrive and use yellow warning tape to block off the area.

“Even after the water overflowed, I thought they would bring out buckets or something, but there were still people walking around in that area,” Carlos added.
Airport officials eventually had to temporarily close the Lower North Checkpoint security area and redirect passengers to another route to avoid the contaminated area.
However, according to many passengers, even though the gate was moved to another location, the actual location was only a short distance from the incident, so the stench still rose.
The airport authority is still investigating the cause of this leak.
“All affected areas have been isolated and environmental remediation teams are actively cleaning and disinfecting,” an airport spokesperson said.
According to this person, customer service staff have been deployed to direct passengers to other areas “to minimize disruption”. In addition, emergency medical personnel have also been deployed in case of any incidents.
“There is no impact on the overall operations of the airport,” the spokesman affirmed.

It is known that the incident occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport (ATL), which is known as the busiest airport in the US and in the world in terms of number of passengers.
It's home to Delta Air Lines, which has held the No. 1 spot for 26 years (27 years of the rankings), dropping once in 2020 when passenger numbers declined.
According to global airport data from Airports Council International (ACI), the airport has consistently held the title of the world's busiest airport for several years, including 2023 and 2019.
In 2024, the airport will serve 108.1 million passengers, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2023. The airport is not only busy in terms of passenger numbers but also in terms of the number of take-offs and landings.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is located about 10km from downtown Atlanta, offering flights to more than 225 destinations in 57 different countries.
