In Ha Tinh, they are raising and fattening a rare hybrid chicken breed called Ho chicken to sell to the world for Tet, thousands of people love it.

As the year-end approaches, Ha Tinh farmers are busy taking care of their Ho hybrid chicken flocks (Ho chicken is one of the rare chicken breeds in Vietnam). Ho hybrid chickens are healthy, have long thighs, small legs, are easy to raise, grow quickly, have good quality meat and high prices, which is also an opportunity to bring in a fairly high income during the Lunar New Year.

Rare breed of chicken, less fighting, fast growing

Currently, the price of Ho hybrid chicken meat ranges from 55,000 - 57,000 VND/kg, 5,000 - 8,000 VND/kg lower than a month ago, this selling price is also lower than the same period last year.

According to farmers, the main reason is due to large supply but reduced purchasing power, along with great competition with cheap industrial chickens.

During the Lunar New Year, the time when poultry consumption is the highest in the year, the price increases by 20-30% compared to normal days, leading to an increase in selling prices. The famous Ho hybrid chicken breeding areas such as the coastal communes of Thach Van (Thach Ha district), Yen Hoa (Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province), the quality of the meat is firm and delicious, it has been the priority choice of customers for many years, the opportunity to bring good profits to the breeders.

Identifying this as an important crop of the year, normally Mr. Nguyen Van Chau's family, residing in Tan Van village, Thach Van commune, Thach Ha district, only maintains a flock of 700-1000 Ho hybrid chickens per litter.

But this year, his family has proactively increased the herd of Ho hybrid chickens to have enough supply for the Tet market.

According to Mr. Chau, the Ho hybrid chicken breed grows fast, is easy to raise, has delicious meat, beautiful appearance, and has feathers and a crest quite similar to the fighting chicken breed.

Ho hybrid chickens lay eggs regularly, similar to eggs from local chickens. Ho hybrid chickens have tall, small legs without rough scales like pure Ho chickens.

Ho hybrid chicken meat is firm, delicious, thick and crispy skin, so it is favored by the market. Ho hybrid chicken is a cross between Ho chicken as the father and Luong Phuong chicken as the mother. Therefore, they inherit the outstanding advantages of their parents.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chau said: "During the Lunar New Year, which is the business season for livestock farmers, the market demand for broiler chickens is always higher than usual. Therefore, from the beginning of October 2024, my family boldly increased the number of chickens in Ho to 2,000.

Currently, the Ho crossbred chicken flock has reached a weight of 1.5-2 kg/chicken. The current selling price, 55,000 - 57,000 VND/kg, is not high, we still expect that during Tet, the price may increase so that farmers can make better profits."

According to Mr. Chau, the last month of the year often has many cold spells, so the barn must be ensured to keep the chickens warm. Ho hybrid chickens must be raised with a reasonable diet, supplemented with supplements to increase resistance. This will reduce the rate of chicken loss during the raising process, ensuring high economic efficiency.

In the "capital" of raising hybrid Ho chickens on sand in Yen Hoa commune (Cam Xuyen district), breeders are also busy taking care of their chickens to prepare for the biggest consumption season of the year.

Mr. Tran Van Nga's family, a large-scale Ho hybrid chicken breeder in Bac Hoa village (Yen Hoa commune, Cam Xuyen district) has 8 coops, with a flock size of more than 10,000 chickens/batch. The chickens are raised on sandy soil, ensuring a dry environment.

According to Mr. Tran Van Nga, in winter, there is humidity and rain, but thanks to the sandy soil, the water drains quickly, limiting the spread of many pathogens. To ensure disease safety, the garden is divided into areas to raise many batches of fish of different ages.

Households raising Ho hybrid chickens must strictly follow biosafety procedures, fully vaccinate, and regularly clean and disinfect barns.

At the same time, use biological bedding to deodorize, keep the barn air dry, and spray disinfectant twice a week.

Ho hybrid chicken is easy to raise, easy to sell , high price

"Putting all our hopes on the Ho hybrid chickens, this Tet, in addition to increasing the flock to 3,000, reaching the highest level ever. At this time, my family is also focusing on taking care of the chickens to sell them in time for Tet.

To help the Ho crossbred chickens grow healthily and not get sick with common diseases in cold weather such as bird flu, septicemia... my family also supplements vitamins and minerals, divides the chickens' food into many meals, to increase the chickens' resistance," Mr. Tran Van Nga revealed.

To prepare well for the Tet chicken crop, in addition to focusing on care and disease prevention, farmers also pay great attention to choosing quality chicken breeds that are easy to raise and easy to consume.

According to breeders in Yen Hoa commune, Cam Xuyen district, the chicken breed chosen by people this year is mainly the Ho hybrid chicken breed.

Mr. Phan Danh Chi, in Phu Hoa village, Yen Hoa commune, Cam Xuyen district, said: "For many years, people in this area often raised sugarcane chickens, but in the past 2 years, the Ho hybrid chicken has been the preferred choice. My family has just switched to raising Ho hybrid chickens since last year.

In the first batch, it was found that the Ho hybrid chicken breed is not only easy to raise, grows quickly, has few diseases, and adapts well to the harsh climate conditions in the coastal area of Ha Tinh, but also has quality meat with firm, yellow skin, and a characteristic aroma, which is favored by the market.

"This year, I switched to raising entirely Ho hybrid chickens. Currently, the flock of 1,500 Ho hybrid chickens is growing well, each reaching 1.7-2.2 kg/chicken, and by the time of sale, they will reach a weight of 2.5-3 kg/chicken. Currently, I have planned and proactively supplied the market for the 2025 Lunar New Year.

Speaking with Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Phan Xuan Duc - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Yen Hoa commune, Cam Xuyen district, said: "The whole commune has a total herd of Ho hybrid chickens of 200,000, the largest in Cam Xuyen district. The Ho hybrid chickens are raised in the villages of Phu Hoa, Bac Hoa.... Currently, the whole commune has about 10 models with a scale of over 3,000 chickens/batch, nearly 150 models with 200 - 500 chickens/batch, of which 22 households are raising them according to the VietGAP model."
