OECD highly appreciates Vietnam in its role as Co-Chair of the Southeast Asia Program - Lang Son Electronic Newspaper

The OECD Secretary-General pledged to be ready to coordinate and proactively work with Vietnam to select specialized panels to support Vietnam in grasping and applying global trends and standards.

On the occasion of attending the 2024 OECD Council Ministerial Conference (MCM), taking place on May 2-3 in Paris, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son met with Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann.

At the meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son conveyed the words and letter of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh thanking OECD for inviting Vietnam to attend the MCM Conference as well as for supporting and assisting Vietnam in its role as Co-Chair of the Southeast Asia Program (SEARP) for the 2022-2025 term.

The Minister proposed that OECD coordinate with Vietnam to focus on implementing two important cooperation focuses.

Firstly, continue to support the implementation of 15 projects in the Vietnam-OECD Action Plan for the period 2022-2026.

Second, further strengthen the partnership on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) through research and analysis on Vietnam's economic foundation and create conditions for Vietnam to participate more deeply in OECD's specialized committees, helping Vietnam better understand and contribute to the process of building global governance policies, especially in the fields of finance, tax, economics, development, digital policy, investment, science and technology, etc.

Secretary General Mathias Cormann expressed his impression of the discussions and policy exchanges with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The Secretary-General highly appreciated Vietnam's role and active and responsible contributions to the SEARP Program; affirmed the importance of the Vietnam-OECD relationship; committed to being ready to coordinate and proactively select specialized committees with Vietnam to support Vietnam in grasping and applying global trends and standards for the process of formulating appropriate development policies.

Australia wants to further promote cooperation with Vietnam

On the same day, at the OECD headquarters, Minister Bui Thanh Son met with Australian Co-Minister of Trade and Manufacturing Tim Ayres.

At the meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that the two sides soon complete the development of the Action Program to implement the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework, creating a solid foundation for the two countries to continue to deepen and expand further in various fields, especially economics, trade, investment, agriculture, education, training, labor, etc. and expand cooperation to new areas such as green economy, energy transition, digital transformation; and suggested that Australia continue to provide ODA support for climate change response and human resource development.

Minister Tim Ayres highly appreciated the close coordination between the two countries in his capacity as Co-Chair of the OECD's Southeast Asia Program (SEARP) (2022-2025); affirmed continued support for Vietnam to strengthen its strong relationship with the OECD; agreed to implement projects under the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between Vietnam and the OECD (MOU), and mobilize OECD resources to serve the development and implementation of Vietnam's socio-economic development strategies and policies.

The Australian Minister affirmed his support for the Vietnam-Australia-Laos trilateral cooperation project and wished to further promote cooperation with Vietnam in various fields.

The two sides highly appreciated the results of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Australia in March 2024 and the very good and effective developments in the bilateral relationship in recent times, demonstrating trust in the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Proposing Japan to pay attention to increasing investment in Vietnam

Also on the afternoon of May 3, Minister Bui Thanh Son met with Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko.

At the meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that Japan pay attention to promoting investment in Vietnam in new fields such as semiconductor manufacturing, helping Vietnam participate in Japan's supply chain in the region; promote cultural cooperation, people-to-people exchange, labor cooperation, human resource training, especially in the semiconductor industry; create favorable and equal conditions for Vietnamese workers in Japan; simplify visa procedures, moving towards visa exemption for Vietnamese citizens to promote tourism cooperation and people-to-people exchange between the two countries.

Minister Kamikawa Yoko highly appreciated the role, contributions and efforts of Vietnam when assuming the responsibility of Co-Chair of the OECD's Southeast Asia Program (SEARP) (2022-2025); supported the initiatives, orientations and priorities proposed by Vietnam to promote cooperation with the OECD; agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries at multilateral forums such as OECD, ASEAN...; hoped that Vietnam would continue to promote its role in promoting ASEAN - Japan and ASEAN - OECD cooperation in the coming time.

Minister Kamikawa Yoko expressed his desire to promote sustainable development in Vietnam and Southeast Asia; support the creation of conditions for Vietnam to participate in OECD Committees; agreed to continue implementing economic cooperation projects in Vietnam and support vocational training. The Japanese Minister agreed to promote the exchange of delegations at all levels between the two countries; affirmed that Japan will continue to support Vietnam in promoting industrialization and modernization in the new context.

The two sides expressed their delight at the remarkable developments in bilateral relations in recent times and agreed to closely coordinate and promote the concrete implementation of the Vietnam-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world; agreed to continue to strengthen coordination, share stances, and cooperate on regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea issue.

Vietnam is an active and responsible member of the Francophone community.

During his visit and work in France, Minister Bui Thanh Son also visited the headquarters of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) in Paris and met with Secretary General Louise Mushikiwabo.

At the meeting, Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam is an active and responsible member of the Francophone community; always supports the efforts of OIF in promoting cooperation for peace and development in the world and in the Francophone space; supports member countries in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, enhancing digital transformation, green transformation, responding to global challenges such as epidemics, environmental pollution, climate change, etc.

Minister Bui Thanh Son said that Vietnam will participate and actively contribute to the 19th Francophone Summit taking place in France in October 2024; hoping that this Conference will bring practical results, creating new momentum for Francophone cooperation in the coming time.

Secretary General Louise Mushikiwabo expressed her impression of Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements; emphasized that OIF highly values Vietnam's role and position in the Francophone community; welcomed Vietnam's increased contributions and sharing of experiences with African countries in food self-sufficiency and poverty reduction; agreed to support Vietnam's proposal to promote tripartite cooperation activities in the Francophone space in the fields of agriculture, health, and education; and is ready to act as a bridge to promote sustainable economic, trade, investment, and tourism relations between Vietnam and Francophone countries, especially through the Francophone Economic Strategy 2020-2025 and the Cooperation Program for the period 2024-2027.

The Secretary General emphasized that the Francophone community will strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in developing and spreading the French language, supporting French language training for Vietnamese peacekeeping forces and Vietnamese officials working in the multilateral field; and is ready to receive Vietnamese officials to work at the Francophone Secretariat (OIF)./.
