Paris is considered one of the most influential fashion cities in the world, so it's no surprise that designers are taking the opportunity to showcase their own designs through the athletes' teams.
“I only have 2 seconds in the opening ceremony to make an impression on the world , an impression that can resonate for many years to come,” said Stella Jean, an Italian-Haitian fashion designer who put a lot of effort into designing costumes for about 10 Haitian athletes.
On a much larger scale, the famous brand Ralph Lauren will continue to accompany the US sports team in the 9th consecutive Olympics. This year, the US sports team's uniform stands out for its simplicity with blue jeans and jackets, but of course the amount spent on this design is not small.
Here are the costume highlights from some of the countries participating in the 2024 Olympics.
Canada: Focus on convenience, adaptability
Team Canada’s uniforms were designed by Lululemon, with special attention paid to ventilation and sweat-wicking. These uniforms will be worn by Canadian athletes throughout the entire event, except when competing. To keep athletes comfortable, Lululemon designed special zippers to make the clothing easy to put on and take off, and knee pockets so athletes can access their phones while training.
America: The highlight is blue jeans
“Nothing says America like blue jeans, especially when we’re in Paris,” David Lauren, Ralph Lauren’s chief brand and innovation officer, said, which was his inspiration for designing the uniforms for the U.S. team.
For the ninth time dressing the U.S. team for the opening and closing ceremonies, Ralph Lauren said it will be tailoring each athlete. For the opening ceremony, the athletes will wear tailored navy blazers with blue and white striped Oxford shirts — and blue jeans.
For the closing ceremony, the team will wear white jeans with red, white and blue jackets.
Italy: A fusion of elegance and tradition
The Italian athletes will wear elegant Emporio Armani uniforms, as they have done at every Olympics since 2012. The outfits worn by the athletes on the podium will have the words “W Italy,” which stands for “Eviva Italy.”
“Finding new solutions for athletes' competition clothing, combining elegance and practicality, is always an exciting challenge for me,” said Armani.
Italian athletes will have no excuse for not knowing the national anthem: the opening is printed inside the collar of their polo shirts and the first verse is inside their jackets.
United Kingdom: Four nations, not one
British clothing brand Ben Sherman, responsible for designing the kits for Team GB, stressed that they represent four nations (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland), not one.
The brand's creative director, Mark Williams, said the designs for the opening and closing ceremonies “represent the unity and diversity of the UK, reflecting its rich identity”.
In an email, Williams described his new four nations floral motif, featuring roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks, as serving as "a tribute to the unique identities and histories of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."
Williams stressed that the pattern was not only decorative but also meant to send a message of cooperation and unity. His floral pattern appeared in blue and red on polo shirts, worn with bomber jackets, and with multi-colored socks, in collaboration with the brand Happy Socks.
