Reviewing history to foster pride and responsibility for the country

In August, when the whole country is joyfully looking forward to the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2, the atmosphere in museums and relics in Ho Chi Minh City becomes more bustling than usual. People here are met by all ages, from children on summer tours, students studying thematic subjects, to groups of middle-aged and elderly tourists on a journey back to their roots. All converge in a common emotional flow: searching for national memories to nurture pride and responsibility for the country today.

Vivid memories through visual experience

At the War Remnants Museum, a group of 14 children of Viettel Telecommunications Corporation employees entered the exhibition room with eager eyes. This was not just a simple field trip, but an opportunity for the younger generation to directly access glorious historical events through artifacts and images.

Mothers and children can enjoy a visual tour, viewing historical photographs while listening to explanations through headphones for the best experience at the War Remnants Museum.

Mr. Trong Quang, who was taking his children on a tour of the War Remnants Museum, shared: “After a year of studying, we wanted our children to have an experience that was both enriching and meaningful. This is an annual activity of the company as a gift for the children. This was their first visit to the War Remnants Museum, and I saw the children attentively listening to the explanations and eagerly asking questions. That's more valuable than a lecture in class, because history came to life in a concrete way, touching their emotions.”

Những ngày này tại các bảo tàng, không khó để có thể bắt gặp hình ảnh những em bé đang say mê trước các hiện vật của quá khứ.
These days, it's not uncommon to see children engrossed in artifacts from the past at museums.

In the same space, a group of students from Ho Chi Minh City Open University diligently took notes. Xuan Thao, a business administration student, shared: “What impressed me the most and also haunted me the most was the topic of Agent Orange. It made me see more clearly the brutality of war, and at the same time made us appreciate today's peace more. Trips like this help history become more accessible and connected to the responsibilities of the younger generation.”

The exhibition area dedicated to Agent Orange was where Xuan Thao, like many other students from Ho Chi Minh City Open University, lingered for a long time.

Not only young people, but also older groups of visitors consider this an opportunity to reflect on history and pay tribute to those who fell for the independence of the Fatherland. Mr. Doan Van Ngan, who works at Pha Lai Thermal Power Plant and, along with 36 colleagues from Hai Phong, visited Ho Chi Minh City and expressed: “This is my third time visiting the Ho Chi Minh Museum, Ho Chi Minh City Branch. Although I've been here many times, I still choose to return because of the historical values preserved here. Each time I come, there are new displays, many vivid and engaging details. This change makes the trip not only a reminiscence, but also a constantly fresh experience.”

Ngoc Mai, a young woman studying history at the Ton Duc Thang Museum, shared: “Every time there’s a major holiday, I choose to visit the museum. It’s like a reminder of the responsibility of today’s generation to be grateful to our ancestors, to feel deeply proud of our nation, and to continue that legacy through concrete actions.”

This year, Mai and many of her friends chose to visit the Ton Duc Thang Museum because many of its exhibits incorporate modern technology, showcasing digital technology applications that are relatable to the younger generation.
Lịch sử và truyền thống dân tộc đã đến gần hơn với các bạn trẻ qua các hiện vật được trưng bày.
The history and traditions of the nation have become more accessible to young people through the exhibits on display.

According to statistics, during major holidays, the number of visitors to museums in Ho Chi Minh City usually increases two to three times compared to normal days. Beyond traditional exhibits, many museums have applied audio-visual technology, QR codes, digital narration, and virtual reality, helping visitors, especially young people, easily access history through vivid visual aids.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huynh Giao, a lecturer at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, observed: “Journeys back to our roots during major anniversaries are a way to connect generations. Children can access history through folk games and visual aids; students can access it through educational trips, while for older generations, it's an opportunity to reminisce and pass on memories to the next generation. This is precisely the process of nurturing the national cultural heritage within the community.”

History is not just found in books; it is present in every artifact, every story, every visit, and each time we return to our roots, each generation is rekindled with the "flame" to preserve and promote traditions. From such journeys, love for one's homeland transcends mere emotion, becoming a lasting strength, spreading from the past to the present and transforming into action for the future.
