Khmer Times on April 25 quoted Prime Minister Hun Sen as saying that he is considering running for the position of commune chief in case he resigns as Cambodia’s prime minister. He said he wants to know how the commune chief works, especially the local situation.
He made the remarks while presiding over a graduation ceremony for more than 2,000 teachers, students and educators at the National Academy of Education on April 25.
"While waiting for the 2027 election, I am thinking about running for the position of commune chief somewhere. I do not have the right to nominate for the position of commune chief because this position needs to be elected, but I also want to try to run for election after my term ends," he said.
According to Mr. Hun Sen, if he becomes a commune chief, he can understand more about how local officials work.
On March 14, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that the ruling Cambodian People's Party has found a potential new generation of leaders for the country.
"We have prepared for this plan. It is only a matter of time. We have found a young generation with great potential, we should hand over power to them and step back," he stressed, adding that the young generation needs to have the opportunity to demonstrate their talents.
In December 2021, the Standing Committee of the Central Committee of the Cambodian People's Party nominated Lieutenant General Hun Manet, the eldest son of Mr. Hun Sen, as a candidate for future prime minister.
Mr. Hun Manet, 46 years old, is currently Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander of the Army, Commander of the Counter-Terrorism Force and Deputy Commander of Prime Minister Hun Sen's Bodyguard.
Mr. Hun Sen expressed his support for his son Hun Manet to become the future leader of Cambodia, but he also emphasized that whoever succeeds him must go through an election.
