Negotiations are underway between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's team and Kennedy's team for the independent candidate to endorse Trump and appear at the former president's rally in the Phoenix area on the night of August 23, two sources said.

On August 21, Mr. Kennedy's campaign announced that he would give a speech to the nation in Phoenix on the morning of August 23 but did not share details about what he would say.
Earlier on August 20, Ms. Nicole Shanahan, Mr. Kennedy's running mate, said in a podcast interview that the campaign was considering whether to "cooperate" with Mr. Trump to prevent the "risk" of Vice President Kamala Harris winning the election.
Also on August 20, Mr. Trump expressed openness to independent candidate Kennedy if he withdrew and supported the Republican candidate.
"He's a great guy and very smart. I don't know if he's thinking about stepping down, but if he is thinking about it, I'd certainly be open to it," Trump said.
The relationship between Kennedy and Trump has improved in recent months. In July, Trump and Kennedy spoke by phone in the days after the former US president was shot in Pennsylvania. A day after the call, they met in person in Milwaukee on the first day of the Republican National Convention.
In those conversations, the candidates discussed the possibility of Mr. Kennedy dropping out of the race and endorsing Mr. Trump in exchange for a position in the administration if the former U.S. president returned to the White House.
