Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 26 sent a message wishing Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a speedy recovery, China Global Television Network (CGTN) said.
In the message, Mr. Xi expressed his sincere sympathy to Mr. Lula after learning that the Brazilian leader had flu and pneumonia, and wished Mr. Lula a speedy recovery.
Previously, on March 25, Mr. Lula da Silva's press secretary said that the Brazilian President had postponed his high-level visit to China for medical reasons, and the visit scheduled for March 27-31 would be postponed to a later date.
Following a clinical assessment, Mr. Lula, 77, was diagnosed with bacterial and viral bronchopneumonia caused by influenza A, and treatment was initiated, according to a medical note issued by the press secretary.
“Although the clinical condition has improved, the health agency of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil recommends postponing travel to China until the virus transmission cycle ends,” the note said.
The Brazilian government has informed the Chinese authorities of the situation and reiterated the Brazilian leader's wish to reschedule the visit to another date.
For his part, in his message, Mr. Xi Jinping also expressed his welcome for Mr. Lula da Silva's visit at some point "when convenient for both sides."
China is set to be the stop for Mr Lula's third state visit, following visits to Buenos Aires to meet Argentine President Alberto Fernandez and to Washington to meet US President Joe Biden.
The world's No. 2 economy is Brazil's largest trading partner. Lula had planned to bring a large delegation to Beijing that included several Brazilian cabinet ministers, plus governors, lawmakers and 240 business leaders.
Notably, more than a third of the business leaders accompanying the Brazilian president come from Brazil's farm sector, with China being the largest importer of its beef, soybeans and wood pulp .
