According to the Kyiv Independent, Mr. Whitaker's nomination comes amid concerns that the new Trump administration will significantly reduce US investment in NATO.
“Mr. Matt will strengthen America’s relationships with our NATO allies and stand firm against threats to peace and stability. He will put America first,” Mr. Trump said in a statement on November 20.

Mr. Whitaker (55 years old) served as acting US Attorney General for 3 months during Mr. Trump's first term as President. However, he is said to have no experience in national security, diplomacy , or foreign policy.
In February, Mr. Trump declared that he would “encourage” Russia to attack any NATO country that he believed was not fulfilling its financial commitments to the military alliance.
The New York Times reported in 2019 that Mr. Trump had repeatedly criticized NATO and discussed withdrawing the US from the military alliance while he was in office. Experts say that in his new term, Mr. Trump will probably not withdraw the US from NATO, but the coming years will be a challenge for the military alliance.
Mr. Trump will officially take office on January 20, 2025. Controversy has arisen when some of the nominees for Mr. Trump's new administration are considered to have no policy expertise, such as Fox News host Pete Hegseth being chosen as Secretary of Defense, and Congressman Mike Waltz as US National Security Advisor.
