Promoting a film using 'house rules'

Lasting around a minute, these "house rules" clips are shown before movie screenings to convey rules for watching movies in theaters, such as: no loud talking, no smoking, no livestreaming, no using mobile phones, and no bringing outside food into the theater.

These types of clips are now quite familiar to moviegoers. While previously they were made using simple, familiar graphic clips, recently producers have invested heavily in creating unique "house rules" clips that are more or less related to the upcoming film, as a way to promote it and pique audience curiosity.

For example, to prepare for the official release of the film "Bring My Mother Away," which premiered on August 1st, the producers released a more than one-minute-long "house rules" clip inspired by the golden age of DVD programs like "Rainy Dust" and presented in karaoke format. Set to the familiar melody of the song "Tears of Stone ," the cast of " Bring My Mother Away," including Hong Dao, Tuan Tran, Lam Vy Da, Hai Trieu, Quoc Khanh, etc., adapted the lyrics to highlight things not to do in movie theaters. A special feature is that the actors all appeared in their film costumes and interacted with each other in a very humorous way. Furthermore, the font, colors, and effects were all designed with a strong 1990s feel, demonstrating an understanding of the retro trend among today's youth.

Previously, films like "The Four Villains," "Once Upon a Love Story," "Mai," and "Flip Face 7: One Wish" also used similar promotional methods. These "house rules" clips leveraged the setting, cast, and character personalities from the original works, thereby offering unique creative interpretations. The quality of these "house rules" clips has become an indispensable part of the promotional process. However, currently, only films with large budgets have their own "house rules" clips because the cost of showing them in theaters is quite high, as they are considered separate TV commercials.

However, due to limited content and time constraints, creating unique clips that still leave a lasting impression is no easy task. Fortunately, each film has its own distinct style and story, which helps to avoid repetition. For example, " Bringing Mother Away " cleverly utilizes the song " Tears of Stone, " sung by the main character played by actress Hong Dao, while "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story " brings back the setting of our grandparents' era, much to the audience's delight. " Mai " innovates with a rare one-shot camera technique in Vietnamese cinema, while " Parallel " leverages the news format... Undeniably, these "house rules" clips are a great way to bring films closer to a wider audience.
