According to Reuters, Mr. Trump's comments were made in response to Walmart - the world's largest US retailer - announcing this week that it would have to start raising prices later this month due to high tariffs.
"Walmart should stop blaming tariffs for price increases across its retail chain. Walmart made billions of dollars last year, far exceeding expectations," President Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on May 17.
"With Walmart and China, as they say, they should 'take the tariff' and not charge the customer anything extra," the US leader said.
Walmart has not commented on Mr. Trump's post.
On May 15, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said the retailer could not bear the full cost of tariffs due to the narrow profit margins in the retail industry.
Still, he said the company is committed to not letting tariff-related costs — largely on imports from China — translate into higher food prices.
Many US businesses have had to cut or withdraw their full-year profit forecasts due to trade tensions between the US and its trading partners, especially China, as consumers curb spending.
Walmart's candid statement about the impact of tariffs is seen as a clear sign of how the trade war is affecting the retail industry.
Walmart is famous for its ability to manage costs more aggressively than many other businesses in order to maintain low prices.
Every week, about 255 million people shop in Walmart stores or order online around the world. As many as 90% of the US population lives within 10 miles of a Walmart store.
