The ferry broke down, so the Border Guard used a canoe to help people on Tam Hai island commune travel.

Although the wooden ferry route QNa-0886 is only a secondary means of transport, it has contributed to the travel of the people of Tam Hai commune (Da Nang city) for many years. When the ferry stopped operating due to unsafe conditions, the Border Guard promptly provided support, helping people feel secure during the rainy and stormy season.

For over 10 years, the wooden ferry QNa-0886 with a capacity of 22CV has been operating continuously at the ferry terminal on the route of Binh Trung village - Xuan My (Tam Hai commune, Cua Lo area, Truong Giang river). Although it is only a secondary ferry terminal, this place has a fairly high traffic volume, especially students and workers.

Border Guard canoes take people and students to the mainland to study and work, next to a broken ferry.

On average, the ferry makes more than 50 trips a day, transporting about 200 passengers and 100 motorbikes. However, due to continuous operation, after 20 inspections, on the 21st inspection, the vehicle no longer met safety standards and was forced to stop operating from September 12.

In the face of the emergency, the People's Committee of Tam Hai Commune and the Department of Construction submitted a report and official dispatch requesting support for alternative means of transport. Immediately after that, the People's Committee of Da Nang City directed the City Border Guard Command to arrange canoes to assist people in traveling.

Students have been picked up and dropped off by army canoes every day since the ferry stopped operating on September 12.

Since September 13, Border Guard Squadron 2 of Nui Thanh has deployed a canoe with 4 officers and soldiers to transport people, students, and workers between the two villages of Binh Trung and Xuan My.

Captain Nguyen The Quyen, Squadron Leader, said: “Every day the unit divides the pick-up and drop-off into 4 groups: morning 6-8am, noon 11-12pm, afternoon 1-2pm and evening 5-7pm. All people traveling by canoe are equipped with life jackets to ensure safety.”

The timely presence of the border guards made the people feel secure. Mr. Huynh Van Nhi (67 years old, resident of Xuan My village) shared: "When we heard that the ferry had stopped operating, we were very worried, not knowing how to travel. Now that the soldiers have brought canoes to support, everyone feels reassured."

Every day, the Border Guard force supports about 300 people crossing the Truong Giang River.

Mr. Huynh Van Cuong, Chairman of Tam Hai Commune People's Committee, said: "The support of Nui Thanh Border Guard Squadron 2 has helped the locality reduce pressure on the main ferry terminal, while ensuring the safety of people's lives and property, especially students, in the context of the approaching storm season."

It is expected that the transportation of people by Border Guard Squadron 2 Nui Thanh will operate until October 12.

Although the suspension of ferry QNa-0886 caused immediate difficulties, the timely intervention of the government and border guards helped Tam Hai people maintain their daily lives, while demonstrating the spirit of close military-civilian solidarity in the Truong Giang estuary.
