'Anti-education, physically abusing students'

VTC NewsVTC News23/03/2023

It is possible that the female student was not well-behaved and had violated the rules many times but still did not correct herself according to the teacher's warnings, but according to Associate Professor, Doctor of Psychology Pham Manh Ha, University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the teacher's act of cutting the female student's hair right in the classroom in front of many students was wrong, "wrong in both regulations and professional ethics of teaching".

This incident was the last straw, the teacher felt helpless with the student, could not control his emotions, so he used scissors to cut the student's hair. The teacher is an adult, the one who educates the students, but his behavior is not up to standard.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , the teacher's behavior is classified as school violence, causing deep psychological trauma to the female student in particular and all students in the class who witnessed the incident in general. If not promptly encouraged, it is very likely that this female student will suffer psychological trauma, giving rise to anger, hatred, and even more so, shame, not daring to go to school, and thinking of suicide.

Through this incident, Associate Professor Ha hopes that teachers will learn from experience, when students are not well-behaved, teachers should use positive educational measures to reform them instead of using counterproductive corporal punishment. Teachers need to adhere to the rights of students and learners to educate, and should not use their own ego and impatience to teach them.

Seeing the image of a teacher cutting a student's hair in front of the whole class, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue, from Hanoi Pedagogical University, was "shocked". She said this was an act of physical abuse, violating the privacy and personal rights of students. If family, friends, and teachers do not promptly encourage them, it will leave serious psychological consequences for them.

High school students are at the age of self-affirmation and strong personality, teachers need to understand and provide gentle educational methods, analyze, and coordinate with family to educate. Just one insulting action or defamatory words can cause them to fall into psychological crisis, mild depression, severe depression is very likely to lead to suicidal thoughts.

According to Dr. Hue, this is not the first time such an incident has happened. In April 2021, a teacher in Nam Dinh also cut a male student's hair. This teacher was disciplined and warned for her unexemplary behavior.

"The teacher in Vinh Phuc is the same, she must definitely be disciplined, but the level of punishment needs to be carefully discussed, it should not be too harsh, to avoid hurting both the teacher and the student," he said.

Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Chairman of the Hanoi Association of Educational Psychology, acknowledged that the teacher may have wanted the best for the students, but this action violated the students' freedom.

Seeing students with inappropriate hairstyles, teachers need to prioritize educational goals, which is to advise students, coordinate, explain to parents and possibly suggest that students need appropriate hairstyles when going to school... Teachers who cut their own hair are violating, not behaving in an educational way and completely imposing like the old-fashioned education.

All methods in schools must be educational, based on the students' voluntary participation to avoid abuse of power and imposition. Teachers must realize that in education, students must be respected and the focus must be on methods.

Teachers must understand educational methods and student psychology, and especially must not educate in an oppressive or authoritative manner. They must help students become self-aware, self-disciplined and self-improved. Even families should not impose on students, but should respect them to help and educate them gradually, the expert said.

The incident of a teacher cutting a female student’s hair in front of many students happened a few days ago in class 10A10, Doi Can High School (Vinh Tuong District, Vinh Phuc). According to initial information, this teacher used scissors to cut the hair of a female student in the class to warn her about dyeing her hair, although she had been reminded many times but had not changed.

"This is an excessive action by the teacher, a serious violation of teachers' ethics. The teacher did not respect the honor of the students, so her actions and words were not up to standard. The Department of Education and Training and other units will definitely thoroughly resolve this," said a representative of the Department of Education and Training.

Article 28, Decree 4 issued in 2021 by the Government stipulates administrative sanctions for violations in the field of education, with a fine of 5 - 10 million VND for acts of insulting the honor, dignity, or violating the body of a learner but not to the extent of criminal prosecution or disciplining the learner in violation of regulations... The violator must publicly apologize to the person whose honor, dignity, or body was insulted.
