French security services have arrested an 18-year-old suspected of plotting attacks during the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. The young man was an administrator of a Telegram group called the "French Aryan Division".
According to France 24, the suspect is currently in custody in the Bas-Rhin region of eastern France and is being questioned by anti-terrorism police. French security agencies are on high alert ahead of the July 26 opening day of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Around 10 million visitors and 10,000 athletes are expected to be in the French capital for the occasion.
Le Parisien newspaper said the young man had followers on Telegram, with the goal of being ready to carry out attacks and threaten violence against activities at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In a related development, on the evening of July 17 (local time), a car crashed into a cafe in the capital Paris, killing one person and injuring at least six others, three of whom are in serious condition. The driver fled the scene, while a passenger in the car was arrested. A source close to the investigation confirmed that the passenger tested positive for drugs and alcohol. Police are conducting forensic examinations on the car, with initial investigation results leaning towards the possibility of a “car accident”.
