This plant is also known as tiger beard, a rare plant with unique morphology and high biological value. Black bat flower is a rare plant and is recognized for its medicinal potential in traditional medicine.

The discovery of rare tree species contributes to affirming the conservation value of the forest, supplementing the biodiversity database and creating the premise for scientific and medicinal research as well aseducating the community about the importance of the forest ecosystem.

Mr. Dao Van Tuong, Director of Sop Cop Special-Use Protection Forest Management Board, informed: Implementing the plan to patrol, protect forests and monitor biodiversity in May, the unit has deployed activities such as: Organizing regular patrols in key areas, controlling areas at risk of forest encroachment.

During the patrol, the unit coordinated with local communities in forest protection; conducted surveys and recorded rare species of flora and fauna to update biodiversity data and serve long-term research and conservation.

The Sop Cop Special-Use Protective Forest Management Board has coordinated with experts and localities to inspect and review rare plant species.

This tree species often grows under the canopy of dense, humid forests, on humus-rich soil, ideal conditions typical of the special-use, protective forests of Sop Cop.

The presence of the black bat flower here shows that the forest still preserves many rare native plant species, possibly even species that have never been recorded before.

Red poplar, a rare plant in the Red Book, was also discovered in the protective forest in Nam Lanh commune, Sop Cop district.

“Along with protecting the black bat flower, we are also developing a plan to investigate and assess the distribution level with the aim of preserving and developing the red poplar species, also known as the green Bodhi. This is a rare plant species, listed in the Red Book, and needs to be protected,” added Mr. Dao Van Tuong.

Initial survey results on an area of 50 hectares discovered 20 red poplar individuals scattered in Nam Lanh commune, in the Nam Lanh commune protective forest managed by the Sop Cop Special-use Protective Forest Management Board.

Currently, the Sop Cop Special-Use Protective Forest Management Board is continuing to coordinate with forestry experts to conduct further research and investigation on this tree species, from which to develop a plan for conservation and propagation.

Deploying forest inspection activities using handheld GPS devices combined with SMART software on smartphones.

In the context of increasingly complex forest resource encroachment, to further ensure the management and protection of forests and rare plant species, the Sop Cop Special-Use Protection Forest Management Board has applied SMART software to the process of forest patrolling and checking. This is a tool for forest protection management and reporting results using information technology, which has been and is effective.

Currently, the unit is focusing on training staff, improving technology skills, and integrating additional features such as UAV monitoring to build a smarter and more sustainable forest protection system.
