The eight-sided sword is believed to date back to the late 14th century BC during the Middle Bronze Age, Insider reported. It was discovered last week during excavations in the Bavarian city of Noerdlingen, according to a statement from the Bavarian State Office for Monuments Conservation.
"The sword and the tomb still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can classify the discovery more precisely," the AP news agency quoted Professor Mathias Pfeil, head of the office.
"But we can say that the sword is in surprisingly good condition. A find like this is very rare," said Mr. Pfeil.
The office said the sword was recovered from a triple grave containing the remains of a man, a woman and a teenager.
Each set of remains was accompanied by bronze burial objects, officials said. It is unclear whether the three individuals are related.
According to the office, finding swords from the Bronze Age is rare. Sometimes, these swords come from graves that were deliberately excavated in the 19th century.
The Bronze Age lasted from about 3300 to 1200 BC.
