In the introduction of the book, Dr. Nguyen Van Doan - Director of the National History Museum affirmed: “Known as the land of “Peaceful Thuan Hoa”, Binh Thuan is an ideal place for many generations of residents through many eras. According to the book Dai Nam Nhat Thong Chi, Binh Thuan prefecture was officially established in 1697, during the reign of Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu. Up to now, in terms of administration, Binh Thuan has had a history of more than 300 years of formation and development. However, the history of this land is not only counted from the end of the 17th century, but must be counted from thousands of years ago, with the appearance of archaeological relics in the ancient alluvial area of the La Nga river basin in Duc Linh, Tanh Linh and on the sand dunes of the coastal plain in Ham Thuan Nam, Ham Thuan Bac, Bac Binh. These relics all date back to about 3,500 - 2,500 years, marking the earliest appearance of humans on this sunny and windy land…”.

Some Prehistoric and Protohistoric artifacts discovered in Binh Thuan

Through 353 pages of the book, the authors have presented fully, in detail and systematically the results of excavation, investigation and survey of archaeological relics of Prehistoric and Early Historic periods in the province. Typical relics and artifacts are illustrated with drawings, photos and embossed patterns with high accuracy, science and aesthetics. These are all original and reliable documents for researchers and readers who are passionate about history. The authors outline a framework of the development stages from Prehistoric to Early Historic in Binh Thuan and place it in a broader context with the relationship with contemporary cultures in the Central, Central Highlands and Southeast regions. The characteristics of relics and artifacts as well as some issues about the material and spiritual life of the owners of Prehistoric and Early Historic relics in Binh Thuan are also raised in a careful, objective and scientific manner.

From archaeological documents in Binh Thuan, we see a colorful picture of the Southern Prehistoric period, with the presence of many ancient communities from the Neolithic period, residing on different types of terrain, sharing common elements of the era, while preserving and creating values of their own identity. On that basis, when the wave of Sa Huynh culture from the Central region spread, this land continued to develop in a unified flow, with a unique nuance that was not blurred in the mosaic of Prehistoric culture in the Southern land of the Fatherland.

The cooperative relationship has been strengthened in the past two decades, especially through a series of surveys and excavations in Duc Linh, Ham Thuan Nam, Ham Thuan Bac, Bac Binh... Part of these achievements have been and are being displayed on the permanent exhibition system of the Binh Thuan Provincial Museum, giving the public a vivid and comprehensive view of the history of the land. Through the book, we can see that since prehistoric times, Binh Thuan has been the land of agricultural and handicraft communities, but at the same time, coastal residents with lively and open exchange activities...
