At the ceremony, delegates burned incense at Ong Pagoda and listened to the announcement and presentation of the Decision of the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment recognizing the banyan tree at Ong Pagoda (Long Thoi Hamlet, Long Binh Commune, Go Cong Tay District) as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree. The banyan tree at Ong Pagoda is nearly 300 years old, dating back to around 1730, meeting all the conditions to be honored as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree.
From ancient times to the present, the banyan tree in Ong Pagoda has been considered a sacred place of the commune. During the resistance wars against the French colonialists and the American imperialists, this place was our shelter and meeting place to fight the enemy. In 1965, the enemy suspected that the revolutionary forces were sheltering in the pagoda area near the banyan tree, so they used artillery to bombard this area, causing 8 casualties.
Through the changes of time and history, the banyan tree at Ong Pagoda is still green, growing, and providing shade, closely associated with the daily life, spiritual life, history, and culture of local people.
The ceremony also announced the Decision of the People's Committee of Go Cong Tay district on the establishment of the Heritage Tree Management Board for the banyan tree at Ong pagoda, consisting of 14 members, responsible for managing, protecting, exploiting, using, preserving and promoting historical values and cultural heritage according to the law.
Vice Chairman of Long Binh Commune People's Committee Le Thanh Quan was elected Head of Heritage Tree Management Board.
