Honoring Vietnamese cultural identity

The Vinh Long Provincial Cinema Association was established after the television industry was born and developed strongly in the 2000s. Previously, in the 1980s and 1990s, cinema activities in Vinh Long mainly focused on screening films to serve the needs of the masses. At that time, the cinema system included 3 cinemas: Le Thanh, Vu Dong, and another cinema located at the location that is now the Provincial Museum's administrative building.

In addition, there are dozens of mobile film teams that regularly screen films for the people in the province, which people call “going to the movies”. These movie screenings attract a large audience, sometimes up to several hundred people.

After 1990, cinema and movie screening activities gradually stagnated and then disappeared due to the rise of home video . In 1992, the provincial Television Station was established, marking a major turning point in cinema activities in Vinh Long.

From the mid-2010s until now, the film industry has made a breakthrough, achieving remarkable achievements. From the initial basic genres of journalism such as news and reportage, over time, Vinh Long Radio and Television Station (THVL) has developed to genres with a higher level of expertise such as reportage and documentary.

Later, when the technical platform began to develop strongly, to meet the broadcasting needs, THVL gradually entered a much more difficult field: producing entertainment programs, including feature films. According to the Provincial Cinema Association, THVL's feature films are considered to be outstanding with very high viewership ratings, not only locally or in the Mekong Delta region, but also in many other remote areas across the country.

Mr. Huynh Tan Phat - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vinh Long Newspaper and Radio and Television said that since 2010, the station has started broadcasting a new Vietnamese film episode every day in prime time at 8pm on THVL1 channel. A great success of the station in promoting literary and artistic works in recent times is developing scripts, adapting literary works into feature film scripts and organizing the production of Vietnamese feature films.

Through the films, the cultural and spiritual life and unique cultural features of the people of the Southwest are vividly reflected. Especially the films adapted from the literary works of Ho Bieu Chanh such as “Loi tan hoi”, “Ai tran gioi”... and films adapted from cai luong such as: “Con gai chi Hang”, “Tinh ma tu”, “Tieng tho trong mua”...

The station also focuses on producing historical films that contribute to educating the nation’s historical traditions, such as the film “Heroic Spirit” about the life and revolutionary career of the late Chairman of the Council of Ministers Pham Hung. The film won the Golden Kite Award in 2009 - one of the prestigious awards organized by the Vietnam Cinema Association. Or the film “Trôn nghĩa hợp chung”, about the vibrant and enthusiastic revolutionary life of the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet...

Mr. Huynh Tan Phat shared that folk literature works, especially Vietnamese fairy tales, are also adapted into films by the station to broadcast in programs such as: "Fairy Tale World", "Old Stories" to contribute to preserving Vietnamese folk literature, while educating the younger generation on the core lessons of Vietnamese culture.

THVL is also one of the pioneers in cooperating to produce pure Vietnamese 3D animation films such as: "Vietnamese Fairy Tales", "Fairy Tale World"... These are programs with gentle, simple content, but highly educational, with profound aesthetic value, not only serving children but also contributing to promoting Vietnamese cultural identity for many TV viewers.

Deep message orientation

The past 15 years have been a memorable journey in the history of the development of the province's cinema. Without establishing a film studio, THVL chose the direction of organizing production. The station manages the most important stages in the production process such as script - director - actors... A team of good scriptwriters is the most important factor. Having a good script, combined with a talented director and cast will produce a good film.

In just 5 years, from 2020-2025, THVL produced 40 TV series, equivalent to 2,200 episodes, including feature films, fairy tales and short films, including films with high viewership ratings such as "Duyen Kiep", produced in 2022; "Nghiep Sinh Tu" and "Tham Ambition Sang Gia", both produced in 2024. In addition, there are films "Vua Banh Mi", "Luoi Troi", weekend short film "Ga Hoan Luong"; "Dong Nho"... Many films won high awards at national television and film festivals.

The pioneers in producing feature films on THVL have concluded and made the following statement: "The reason for every success or failure of film production is whether the theme, ideology, goal and message are big enough to convey to the viewers or not."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said: "In the plan to implement the strategy for developing cultural industries, the province identifies cinema as a cultural industry that needs to be promoted and strengthened because cinema is artistic, international, and is a useful and effective information channel to promote the image, people, country of Vietnam, and Vietnam tourism..."

Since 2017, the Provincial People's Committee has issued a plan to implement the strategy for developing cultural industries until 2020, with a vision to 2030. In terms of infrastructure investment, the province has 2 cinemas at Vincom Trade Center (each with 200 seats) with an investment capital of 19.5 billion VND and a Television Theater - Cinema complex with items such as: a television theater block with a 600-seat auditorium, a 3-room cinema block (each with 200 seats), a film studio block with 3 auditoriums for audience interaction... with a total investment of 200 billion VND. This is the premise for continuing to develop the province's cinema and radio-television activities.

Film professionals and managers need to identify the political, economic and social development trends of the country, thereby orienting the film industry towards a suitable and harmonious development path. Producing television series and films is not only aimed at pure entertainment. It is also a highly distinctive artistic activity, through reflecting real life, conveying to viewers humane messages, aiming at the noble values of national culture, as well as of human culture for thousands of years, which are truth, goodness and beauty.
