Developing tourism through technology.

Abu Dhabi Airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is developing a Smart Travel Project, which includes deploying artificial intelligence (AI) biometric authentication at the airport's security checkpoints by 2025.

According to a statement from local authorities, the project will utilize the database of the UAE Federal Agency for Identification, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security to “automatically authenticate travelers.” This will eliminate the registration procedure that passengers typically have to go through before flights.

Etihad Airways has implemented a biometric system using facial recognition technology before boarding and to support baggage handling and check-in services. This means people will no longer need boarding passes to board one of Etihad's aircraft.

This technology is also being rolled out to five other airlines at check-in counters and boarding gates. The new system is expected to reduce the time from 25 seconds to just 7 seconds at 25 biometric authentication points to complete the entire ticket and travel document verification process.

The smart travel project aims not only for convenience but also to enhance security and operational efficiency. According to Abu Dhabi Airport, the project will improve airline performance by reducing the need for costly infrastructure expansion and effectively detecting fraud and forgery in identification documents. While Abu Dhabi is leading the way in this groundbreaking travel experience, similar biometric technologies are being tested and deployed across Europe.

Italian authorities began testing a facial recognition technology called FaceBoarding last May at Milano-Linate and Catania airports. Passengers use authentication points at the airport to present their documents and scan their faces. This allows them to use FaceBoarding at other checkpoints, speeding up security checks and boarding. SEA, the Italian company managing the FaceBoarding system, stated on the Milano-Linate airport website that those who choose to participate in FaceBoarding will have their data processed “for the purpose of participating in the project.”

Furthermore, "facial images are not stored but are only used to create the biometric profiles necessary to pass security checks and ultimately board the plane at the gate." Individual airlines such as ITA Airways and Scandinavian Airlines have also signed up to use this system for their customers.

The EU is also preparing to implement the Entry/Exit System (EES), an automated registration system for travelers from the UK and non-EU countries. This system requires travelers without long-term visas to scan their faces and passports at automated authentication points when they cross EU borders. The traveler's name, biometric information, and entry/exit dates will be recorded and stored for up to three years after each trip.

For frequent international travelers who frequently travel long distances, new technologies are bringing about a significant shift towards a safer and more seamless travel experience. As biometric technology continues to develop and become more widely adopted, the future of air travel promises to be faster, safer, and more efficient.
