A 74-year-old male patient from Thai Nguyen province was admitted to the hospital with persistent cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and weight loss.

According to the patient's medical history, a lung tumor of approximately 10cm was detected more than a year ago, but instead of undergoing surgery, the patient self-medicated at home. When the symptoms worsened, the patient went to K Hospital for examination.

The chest CT scan revealed that the tumor had grown significantly, occupying almost the entire right chest cavity, compressing the heart and collapsing almost the entire right lung. A biopsy confirmed it was a solitary pulmonary fibroma.

Dr. Nguyen Khac Kiem, Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department, said this was a complex case due to the patient's advanced age, the extremely large tumor size, and its proximity to many vital organs. If surgery had been performed at the time of initial detection, treatment would have been much more successful.

The surgical team carefully dissected the tumor, preserving as much healthy lung tissue as possible and avoiding damage to major blood vessels and the phrenic nerve. After many hours of surgery, the tumor, measuring 26x18cm and weighing nearly 3kg, was successfully removed.

The patient is currently being monitored and undergoing respiratory rehabilitation exercises after surgery.

Doctors advise people not to be complacent about symptoms such as persistent cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. In particular, people over 50, those with a history of smoking, or those frequently exposed to polluted environments should undergo regular lung cancer screenings to detect the disease early and avoid missing the "golden opportunity" for treatment.
