Pilot reveals why takeoff is more worrying than landing

An experienced pilot has revealed why the beginning of a flight causes the most anxiety for those in the cockpit.

Following a series of serious aircraft incidents, crashes, and extensive safety investigations, many passengers have expressed growing anxiety about flying. While there are countless factors that go into a successful flight, for pilots, landing and taking off are perhaps the two most difficult parts of a trip.

Of the 1,468 accidents recorded by the International Air Transport Association in 2024, 770 occurred during landing and 124 during takeoff. Meanwhile, 68 occurred during the cruising phase of the flight.

Take-off is considered by many pilots to be the most anxiety-provoking part of the process.

Although takeoff is statistically less dangerous than landing, it sets the tone for the rest of the flight and still has potential dangers – including some exacerbated by weight and fuel content, which can hinder a successful takeoff.

During both landing and takeoff, there are many external factors that pose risks to the aircraft, including potential traffic and miscommunication on the runway, birds obstructing the flight path, and engine over-running.

However, commercial pilot Steve Schreiber - a former US Navy officer and aircraft accident analyst - asserts that the most important thing a pilot can do is to stay calm and remember their training...

In this regard, on his YouTube channel, pilot Steve Schreiber was asked: Do you often get nervous when flying and between takeoff and landing, which is more worrying?

He says he doesn't get nervous when flying a flight, but not all pilots do. However, if he had to choose one of two situations that makes him more nervous, it would be takeoff.

At that point, the aircraft is “heaviest,” he explained, adding: “Power is all the way up and as slow as you can go. As you lift off the ground, you accelerate, you start burning fuel, then you get lighter and you can pull your power back up.”

In 2025 alone, several serious plane crashes occurred during or shortly after takeoff.

The Air India crash that killed more than 200 people occurred just minutes after takeoff. The plane was seen plummeting to the ground due to a loss of power inside the plane.

In the US, a near collision occurred at LaGuardia Airport when a jet tried to take off on the same runway as another plane was still taxiing. The incident, which occurred in early 2025, was reportedly caused by confusion between air traffic controllers on different frequencies.

In March, a FedEx plane taking off from Newark airport was forced to make an emergency landing after a bird struck an engine, causing a massive fire...
