Online booking app Airbnb has launched a comprehensive upgrade in Los Angeles, USA. The new version allows customers to experience a variety of home services such as massage, private chef and personal trainer.
The launch of the upgraded version marks Airbnb's strategic move to expand its operating model beyond the framework of a simple short-term accommodation service platform.
Airbnb has been redesigned to simplify the booking process, from accommodations, services, to experiences - all in one single platform.
In addition, the app also "reshapes" the experience segment - first introduced nearly a decade ago - allowing tourists to connect with locals to explore destinations through the eyes of locals.
Experiential options now include sightseeing, museums, food tours, water sports , wildlife exploration and many other unique activities.
One impressive new feature is the "Originals" feature, which allows users to sign up for "special" experiences like learning to make pastries at French Bastards with chef Raphaelle Elbaz, or playing beach volleyball with Olympian Carol Solberg on Leblon Beach in Rio de Janeiro.
Speaking at the launch event, CEO Brian Chesky said that the hotel system is currently superior to Airbnb in terms of service. Therefore, the new version of Airbnb aims to help customers experience convenient, high-class services right at home.
Integrating new services into the platform is a step forward to “bring the best of both worlds - great accommodation and impressive service” to customers.
In addition to using these services when traveling , users can schedule service experiences right at their home via the Airbnb app.
According to independent technology analyst Rob Enderle, Airbnb is directly competing with the hotel system as more and more travelers want to have luxury vacation experiences while still maintaining the cozy, private feeling of home.
Mr. Enderle said Airbnb is helping customers enjoy a more complete vacation, avoiding unwanted experiences in far-flung places. He also shared that the cost of staying at resorts is often very expensive, not suitable for travelers on a tight budget.
If Airbnb can ensure safety and quality standards for home services, the platform can diversify its customer segments.
Airbnb says its home-hosting partners are some of the most prominent in their fields—from Michelin-starred chefs to award-winning photographers to world-class personal trainers. The platform also promises that home-hosting is vetted, including verifying the identity of the host, their licenses, and any relevant professional certifications.
Since its launch in 2008, Airbnb has recorded more than 2 billion guests using its service. The platform has created a breakthrough in the field of tourism accommodation. With the new version, Airbnb has now gone beyond the concept of "a place to stay"./.
