On the evening of May 24 (local time), director Tran Anh Hung brought La Passion de Dodin Bouffant (other title: The Pot-au-Feu ) to the 76th Cannes Film Festival. At the premiere, he and the film crew received enthusiastic praise from the audience with a 7-minute standing ovation. A video of the audience's reception of Tran Anh Hung's latest work was posted by Deadline Hollywood and many international news sites.
Amidst the thunderous applause, Tran Anh Hung confided to the media and film lovers: “As a filmmaker, I felt like I was born again in Cannes during the introduction of The Scent of Green Papaya 30 years ago. I was so moved when I heard Vietnamese being sung at this film festival, that feeling is hard to describe. And today, I bring here a French-language film.” The filmmaker expressed that he was honored to have the opportunity to work with the two stars Juliette Binoche, Benoit Magimel as well as the crew and considered the work to be his declaration of love for France.

Not only receiving praise at Cannes, Tran Anh Hung's La Passion de Dodin Bouffant also received many positive responses from international critics.
Variety writer Guy Lodge calls the film a measured, unhurried romance, and Tran Anh Hung’s script is painstakingly detailed in its characters and plot. Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel were once husband and wife, giving the film an unspoken layer of intimacy. “It’s a rich and serene way to film, and Tran Anh Hung feels much more at home in this state than he did in his previous French-language effort, Eternity (2016). The director revels in The Pot au Feu’s rich atmosphere and imagery, but the film never feels alien or overstuffed,” Lodge writes in his review, published by Variety .
The Hollywood Reporter critic Jordan Mintzer called La Passion de Dodin Bouffant a lively and engaging combination of culinary masterpieces with a touching story about love and middle age. Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel were a real-life couple, so they transformed into their characters easily and subtly. The writer also praised the director for his handling of images and content, and commented: "Tran Anh Hung's recent films such as Eternity and I Come With the Rain have all failed. So it's nice to see him find a suitable outlet for his aestheticism."
La Passion de Dodin Bouffant received positive reviews from critics. |
“This is a beautifully shot film by the esteemed filmmaker Tran Anh Hung, where we are left to swoon over all the endless culinary details, the mouthwatering dishes and the tendency for food to be presented as a metaphor for sharing, for family and for friendship,” British film critic Peter Bradshaw wrote in an article published by The Guardian. He called the film a rich blend and praised the lead pair for their subtle, charming performances.
Critic Damon Wise also had many compliments for Tran Anh Hung’s work through his review on Deadline . He called it a gentle, charming film that is worth enjoying, and the cooking scenes are handled beautifully like a work of art but overshadow the love story of the main characters. “ The Pot Au Feu somehow succeeds in honoring the senses,” the critic added.
