From the very first frames, "Tunnels: The Sun in the Darkness" draws viewers into a gruesome scene, depicting the tragedy and death of soldiers and the suffocating underground space – once a vital battlefield for our army and people. Director Bui Thac Chuyen doesn't choose a glamorous narrative style, but instead takes the audience into cramped battles where soldiers must squeeze through narrow tunnels, facing bombs, bullets, and imminent death. The rare light from the cracks becomes a symbol of fragile hope amidst the darkness of war.
The realistic depictions of war made a strong impression on viewers. |
While watching the film, viewers not only feel the brutality of war on the surface but also understand the hardships of the Cu Chi soldiers as they had to survive underground in suffocating and deprived conditions. The images of sleepless eyes in the darkness, the labored breathing as the enemy searched above, and the sound of bombs exploding and shaking the entire tunnel system all send shivers down the viewers' spines.
The film moved audiences not only with its content but also with the actors' selfless dedication to their art. Quang Tuan, who played Tu Dap, a character inspired by the real-life figure of People's Armed Forces Hero To Van Duc, lost 14kg to match the emaciated physique of a wartime soldier. He also directly met with historical witnesses to gain a deeper understanding of military knowledge and the spirit of his forefathers. Quang Tuan's immersion was not only evident in his appearance but also in his eyes, gestures, and even in those silent yet haunting moments.
Actor Thai Hoa also left his mark with deeply emotional scenes in his role as Bay Theo. One of his most impressive scenes is when the character receives news of his comrade's death. Besides the poignant dialogue, Bay Theo's heavy-hearted gaze perfectly conveyed the pain of a soldier in an unjust war. He himself admitted that some seemingly simple scenes became the biggest challenges in his acting career.
