Mr Thaksin is being closely monitored by a team of six doctors after he was taken to hospital in the early hours of August 23.

Soponrat Singhajaru, the hospital's general director, denied that Mr Thaksin was taken to a VIP room on the 14th floor of the 20-storey building.

He said former Prime Minister Thaksin was taken to a non-air-conditioned room on the 14th floor, where COVID-19 patients were treated. "The air conditioning on that floor was not working, so we had to use two fans for ventilation," Mr Soponrat said.

Mr Soponrat also stressed that Mr Thaksin's room did not have a good view of the city as rooms on that side of the building received direct sunlight and were hot during the day.

According to the hospital director general, Mr. Thaksin suddenly suffered chest pain and had low oxygen levels. His blood pressure was also very high and he was taken to the hospital ward of Bangkok Remand Prison on the first night of his detention (August 22).

"Doctors at the prison hospital tried to lower his blood pressure but were unsuccessful, so they decided to rush him to the Police Hospital at midnight," Mr Soponrat said.

Mr Soponrat added that although the medical staff at the prison hospital were competent, Mr Thaksin's condition required specialist care and advanced medical equipment because of his increased blood pressure.

Mr. Thaksin was immediately given saline and cared for by lung, heart and COVID-19 specialists.

Mr. Soponrat added that the former prime minister was not handcuffed because the law does not stipulate that prisoners under 16 years old and over 70 years old should be handcuffed.

The medical team is obtaining Mr Thaksin's medical records from the hospital treating him overseas to ensure he is receiving proper treatment and three officials from the Department of Corrections have been deployed to monitor him.

According to The Nation , it is not clear how long the former prime minister will be in hospital. Pathumwan police will provide security for the building where Mr. Thaksin is staying.

Mr Soponrat said Mr Thaksin's condition had improved slightly but he still needed oxygen because his blood pressure remained high and he had difficulty breathing.

Visits to Mr Thaksin are not allowed at this time and the Department of Corrections will decide whether Mr Thaksin will be transferred to a private hospital.
