Phuong My Chi and the perfect cultural path

It turns out that Phuong My Chi's path is a perfect cultural path of V-pop. Every step forward is a day to make that treasure more beautiful and radiant.

In the newly revealed trailer, after Buôn Trăng, Rock Hat Gao, Bóng Phù Hoa , the mashup Túy Âm - Lục Hải Vi Vương caused a "storm", Phương Mỹ Chi will bring Vietnamese girl to the 2nd semi-final of Sing! Asia 2025.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre , the 22-year-old artist said that "the biggest thing Chi brought with her to the contest was "patriotism and the support of the Vietnamese people and audience" and she "just wanted to be a little Vietnamese girl coming here to sing Vietnamese songs and interact with international artists".

The answer is somewhat modest but contains a journey of nurturing and blossoming thousands of miles. Phuong My Chi, the little girl who sang folk songs more than 10 years ago, is now grown up.

Phuong My Chi combines traditional folk materials with modern arrangements, along with impressive visual effects of martial arts and costumes, making the local cultural colors bloom.

The folk girl has grown up

At the age of 10, Phuong My Chi stepped onto the stage of The Voice Kids 2013. That was probably the most "fancy" stage she had ever stood on. Chi at that time was skinny, somewhat self-conscious, shy and had sad eyes. However, when she sang, many people were surprised by the rustic, rich, sweet, and affectionate quality of Vietnamese folk songs.

Chi once said that at that time her family lived in a small alley in Ho Chi Minh City. Chi's mother "sold delicious sweet soup".

Chi’s family was very large and her youngest aunt, a folk singer, taught her to sing every day. Chi sang everywhere and anytime. She also sang when she helped her mother sell sweet soup. Because every time she sang, Chi felt very happy.

When MC Tran Thanh asked, "Why are you wearing an Ao Ba Ba here?", Chi said, "Because I sing folk songs." Unlike many contestants at that time who sang pop or foreign music, Chi sang folk songs because she liked their sweet and gentle melodies.

Even now, many years have passed, the songs that Phuong My Chi sang during that period are still sought out by audiences: Que em mua nuoc lu, Ao moi Ca Mau , Dem ganh hao nghe dieu hoai lang, Sa mua giong, Nho me ly mo cot ...

Under the song "Dem Ganh Hao Nghe Dieu Ly Hoai Lang" on YouTube, @thanhdang453 wrote: "It's been 10 years but I still remember Phuong My Chi's voice when she was young. It's so beautiful. I can listen to every sentence, every word, every phrase. I never get bored listening to it." And Tuoi Tre newspaper readers commented every time they read new news about her: "Folk singer Phuong My Chi is all grown up now."

Vietnamese culture blooms on Chi's way

Looking back at Phuong My Chi's path, no one would have thought that the shy girl who used to sing on stage instinctively would have gone so far.

Currently, Phuong My Chi is one of the promising young artists, participating in two hot shows at the same time: Em xinh say hi and Sing! Asia 2025 .

In every show, Phuong My Chi "shines" in her own unique way. On one side, she is a "pretty girl" who is playful, passionate and full of entertainment. On the other side, she "flexes" Vietnamese culture to the fullest on the regional music scene, bringing with her the spirit of connecting and honoring the diversity of nations.

At the age of 22, Chi is shining at her brightest. Possessing a large fan base spanning many ages, Phuong My Chi's artistic "assets" are now the result of talent, accumulated hard work and increasingly determined musical thinking.

After The Voice Kids, Phuong My Chi released albums and extended plays: Que em mua nuoc lu (2014), Thuong ve mien Trung (2017), 16 xuan trang (2019) all purely folk songs. In Bolero lau phai (2021), she wanted to renew herself with bolero and electronic music.

Chi also tried covering ballads but still relied on old songs that before her, many of her older brothers, sisters, and uncles had sung.

Coming from the land of folk songs; struggling and bathing in that cultural flow for ten years, Chi did not "safely sleep" forever, nor did she want to leave the "ore mine" that made her name.

Phuong My Chi is like a "full-wind kite" on the traditional cultural field, while at the same time exploring with a more contemporary and open spirit, expressing the voice and identity of her generation.

It was not until her self-produced album Vu tru co bay (in collaboration with DTAP in 2023) - the first pop album in her career, with a folktronica style (electronic folk), inspired by Vietnamese literary works, that Phuong My Chi truly "leveled up".

From the Universe of Flying Storks , she seemed to have found her true love. To reach Sing! Asia 2025 , Phuong My Chi (with DTAP) pushed that folk culture and tradition to a new level. Chi was free-spirited, sublimated, showing off her soaring high notes while still promoting Vietnamese cultural heritage through music.

Listening to her sing, judge Chen Mei-wei (Taiwan) described it as "the demeanor of a general", and Zhang Liangying said Chi was "the queen of a thousand faces".

Although not all songs are performed well by Phuong My Chi, for example, compared to Bong phu hoa , the mashup Tuy am - Luc hai vi vuong is not as good (although the idea of the arrangement is very interesting). However, compared to others, the performance from Vietnam is still commendable, Vietnamese culture is becoming more and more perfect on the path Chi is taking, meaning the culture can "talk" and go far.

That is probably why Singaporean judge Ly Ve Ton commented that Phuong My Chi "has made the world know that our Asian music can be so great".
