Senior US and Chinese officials during discussions in Vienna (Austria) in May
Bloomberg News on September 17 quoted a US official as saying that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had a meeting with Politburo member - Chairman of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The dialogue in Malta ended on September 17, after the two sides discussed the possibility of the two countries' leaders meeting, as well as other issues in bilateral relations.
Reuters quoted a White House statement as saying that Mr. Sullivan met with Mr. Wang to maintain open lines of communication. The two officials had a "frank, substantive, and constructive" exchange.
The statement also said Mr. Wang discussed security issues, the war in Ukraine and issues across the Taiwan Strait.
The White House added that the two sides "are committed to maintaining this strategic communication channel and will pursue additional high-level engagement and consultation in important areas... in the coming months."
After the meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry also informed about the meeting of the two officials. "The two sides conducted candid, substantive and constructive strategic communication on stabilizing and improving China-US relations," according to the statement.
The meeting is the latest in a series of high-level discussions between officials from the two countries aimed at laying the groundwork for a summit between US President Joe Biden and ChinesePresident Xi Jinping expected to be held this year.
Mr. Sullivan previously met Mr. Wang in Vienna, Austria, in May. The next opportunity for Mr. Biden to meet Mr. Xi is the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, California, in November.
The two leaders last met on November 14, 2022 on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.
