Vietnam - Timor Leste friendship is facing new development opportunities

On July 9, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste Bendito dos Santos Freitas on the occasion of attending the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (July 8-11).

The two Ministers assessed that the Vietnam - Timor Leste friendship is facing new development opportunities, especially after President Jose Ramos-Horta's visit to Vietnam in August 2024; agreed to closely coordinate to implement the results achieved during the visit; focusing on exchanging delegations and high-level contacts, implementing the Joint Committee mechanism at the Foreign Minister level, enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture and fisheries,education , tourism and people-to-people exchange.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam will continue to work with ASEAN countries to support Timor-Leste in completing necessary procedures to soon become an official member of the ASEAN family.

At the request of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son, Minister Bendito dos Santos Freitas affirmed that the Government of Timor-Leste will create a favorable business environment to encourage many Vietnamese enterprises to increase investment cooperation in Timor-Leste; highly appreciate Viettel enterprise which is operating successfully in Timor-Leste; commit to continue supporting Vietnamese candidates at United Nations organizations and other organizations, including the position of judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 term.

On this occasion, the Minister of Timor-Leste once again expressed his gratitude for Vietnam's support for Timor-Leste in the process of joining ASEAN; affirmed that Timor-Leste always attaches importance to developing relations with Vietnam, and suggested that the two sides continue to promote cooperation in areas with great potential, and maintain mutual support at regional and international forums, especially at the United Nations and ASEAN.
