Managing students via Facebook

In a survey, the Department of Education and Training of Ngu Hanh Son District (Da Nang City) found that approximately 50%-60% of students in the district use Facebook. The homeroom teacher will be responsible for monitoring students via Facebook.

Mr. Tran Van Hong, Deputy Head of the Education and Training Department of Ngu Hanh Son District, said that students today are exposed to information technology very early, especially participating in social media and online games. “The impact of online games is already clear, but the fact that many students use social media for inappropriate purposes, causing regrettable consequences, needs to be strictly managed,” Mr. Hong said. According to Mr. Hong, the education sector cannot ban students from using social media and online games because they have time at home outside of school hours. Therefore, teachers need to be equipped to use and manage students through Facebook, as many teachers currently do not even use Facebook.

According to Mr. Tran Tan, Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School (Ngu Hanh Son District), without close supervision from teachers, students' use of social media can cause many problems. Managing students through Facebook will give teachers and schools more channels to monitor students. Teachers must quickly adapt to this method and consider it a duty, a professional task, and the newest pedagogical skill.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hiep, Vice Principal of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School, said that the school has disseminated information to homeroom and subject teachers on how to educate students through Facebook and has also established a separate counseling team to provide positive guidance. Mr. Hiep believes that managing students through Facebook will be combined with professional exchange and learning, creating opportunities for students in the school to interact and learn from each other. The school has created groups for each subject, such as mathematics and foreign languages, so that students can ask questions and raise concerns, and teachers or more advanced students can answer and discuss. In addition, the school also guides teachers to instruct students to use standard Vietnamese when participating in Facebook. If students use incorrect spelling, teachers must correct them immediately to help them avoid language deviations.

Ms. Le Thi Kim Van, a teacher at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School, believes that after a period of implementing student management via Facebook, it has yielded many positive results. “Teachers and students can understand each other better. Any changes in students' psychology can be detected and addressed promptly. Class homeroom sessions are no longer monotonous but offer more topics for discussion,” Ms. Van said.
