The world military today (August 3) has the following information: Indonesia owns the KHAN ballistic missile system; India and the Philippines begin their first joint naval exercise in the East Sea; the UK deploys Ajax armored vehicles to its armored units.

* Indonesia owns KHAN ballistic missile system

The KHAN ballistic missile system (ITBM-600) developed by Turkey 's Roketsan Defense Company has appeared at Raipur A base, belonging to the 18th Field Artillery Battalion (Yonarmed 18/Buritkang Tenggarong), East Kalimantan province, Indonesia, marking the first official deployment within the framework of Indonesia's procurement contract signed in 2022.

The KHAN system is an advanced tactical ballistic missile platform designed to engage high-value targets in complex battlefield conditions. The missile is equipped with a hybrid guidance system combining GPS and GLONASS global positioning systems, allowing for precision strikes even in combat environments with heavy electronic jamming.

The KHAN missile has a maximum range of 280km, weighs about 2,500kg, and has a diameter of 610mm. The system is mounted on a Tatra 8×8 high-mobility vehicle chassis, helping to reduce the time to set up the battlefield, improving mobility and survivability on the battlefield.

According to Roketsan, the highlight of KHAN is its flexibility and high lethality, meeting modern combat needs.

Before Indonesia, this missile system was deployed to the Turkish Armed Forces.

Indonesia’s acquisition of the KHAN is considered an important step forward in its efforts to modernize its artillery force and enhance its strategic deterrence capabilities. In the context of the volatile security environment in Southeast Asia, the ability to conduct long-range precision strikes is considered by Jakarta to be a key factor in protecting sovereignty and maintaining regional stability.

* India, Philippines begin first joint naval exercise in South China Sea

India and the Philippines began their first joint naval exercise in the South China Sea on August 3. According to Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Harsh Kumar Jain, the event marks a positive turning point in bilateral relations and also opens the way for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s state visit to India next week.

Indian naval ships participating in the exercise include guided missile destroyer INS Delhi (D61), logistics ship INS Shakti, anti-submarine corvette INS Kiltan (P30) and reconnaissance ship INS Sandhayak.

Philippine Army Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the joint exercise was a clear demonstration of the shared resolve to protect freedom of navigation and enforce international law. The military official said the Philippines has conducted similar exercises with the United States, Australia, Japan, France and Canada.

In recent years, defense cooperation between India and the Philippines has been greatly enhanced through training activities, information sharing and capacity building support. Notably, the Philippines was the first country to purchase India's BrahMos supersonic missile system, under a $374.9 million contract signed in January 2022.

* The UK has deployed Ajax armoured vehicles to its forward armoured units.

On August 2, the British Army announced that it would officially deploy the new Ajax tracked reconnaissance combat vehicle to three forward armored cavalry regiments. This is an important step in the process of replacing the CVR(T) Scimitar vehicle line that has been in service since the 1970s.

The Ajax, developed by General Dynamics Land Systems UK, is the core platform in a system of six variants. The other five variants include the Ares armoured personnel carrier , Athena command and control vehicle, Apollo armoured recovery vehicle, Atlas recovery vehicle, and Argus engineering reconnaissance vehicle.

The Ajax version is equipped with a 40mm CT40 gun, supporting high-explosive and armor-piercing ammunition, along with advanced sensor systems such as long-range thermal cameras, ground reconnaissance radars, laser rangefinders and a panoramic command system.

With STANAG level 4 armor protection, Ajax is resistant to armor-piercing bullets, artillery fragments and anti-tank mines. The digital design integrates all information systems, electronic warfare and firing elements into a unified control network, allowing the crew of 3 to operate effectively in multi-domain combat environments.

According to Army Recognition, HCR will be one of the first units to receive the Ajax. In the role of strategic-tactical intelligence collection, route surveillance and deep reconnaissance, HCR will have the added ability to gather precise intelligence in direct threat conditions thanks to the Ajax's long-range sensors and superior capabilities.

At RDG, the rapid response unit based at Catterick, Ajax will enhance its reconnaissance range, digital collaboration capabilities and ability to operate effectively in high-intensity combat environments. Meanwhile, the Royal Lancers, which specialises in information gathering, terrain analysis and enemy tracking, will maximise the capabilities of Ajax’s new optical systems, encrypted communications and distributed warfare capabilities.

In addition to the three regiments mentioned above, a number of reconnaissance platoons will be equipped with Ajax to support Challenger 2 and Challenger 3 tanks, performing the task of clearing the way, protecting the formation and detecting risks before the main force attacks.

With over 500 vehicles expected to be delivered, Ajax is at the heart of the UK Ministry of Defence’s “Future Soldier” and “Land Industrial Strategy”. The introduction of Ajax will not only replace older equipment but will also redefine the role of reconnaissance forces on the modern battlefield: from passive observation to active combat.
