According to the results of the review of poor and near-poor households in 2023 according to the multidimensional poverty standards for the period 2022-2025 announced by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in February 2024, the overall poverty rate nationwide is 2.93%, with 815,101 households; the near-poor household rate is 2.78%, with 771,235 households. By the end of September 2024, the poverty rate nationwide will decrease by 1%, to 1.93%.
This is the result of support policies, mobilizing the cooperation of the whole society to help poor and disadvantaged households improve their lives. Notably, the Government, ministries, branches and localities increasingly focus on the goal of not only helping poor households have equal and full access to basic social services, meeting their minimum living needs in terms of health, education , housing, clean water, sanitation and information. This is also what makes Vietnam one of the first 30 countries in the world and the first country in Asia to apply the multidimensional poverty standard, ensuring a minimum standard of living and lack of access to basic social services for the poor and those living in poor areas. In particular, the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction is considered the key point in the "revolution" of hunger eradication and poverty reduction in our country. With the spirit of "leaving no one behind", giving "fishing rods" instead of "fish", all levels and sectors have helped thousands of poor, near-poor households and poor areas have more conditions, promote internal strength, self-reliance, and strive to escape poverty sustainably.
Along with the whole country, Gia Lai always focuses on caring for and helping poor and disadvantaged households in many forms, especially mobilizing socialized resources. With the spirit of "helping each other", "mutual love", from October 2023 to the end of September 2024, the "For the Poor" Fund at all levels in the province received 39,135 billion VND. From this source of money, 367 houses were built and repaired; nearly 900 people received medical treatment and scholarships; more than 230 households received livelihood support to develop production... Sub-project 1-Project 3 on supporting production development in the agricultural sector under the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction is a highlight when actively supporting the needs of hundreds of poor and near-poor households in terms of plant varieties and livestock. In addition, many organizations, individuals and businesses also contributed significant resources to poverty reduction. Recently, the Provincial People's Committee received more than 4 billion VND donated by Vietnam Tobacco Corporation and Vietnam Chemical Group to build 60 houses for policy families and poor households in An Khe town, Kong Chro and Chu Se districts.
Thanks to diverse solutions and support forms, by the end of 2024, Gia Lai will have about 23,884 poor households, accounting for 6.07%. Of which, poor households of ethnic minorities are 21,377 households, accounting for 12.71%. In 2024, poor households will decrease by 2.04%; poor households of ethnic minorities will decrease by 4.34%. The whole province currently has 34,546 near-poor households; of which, ethnic minorities are 27,671 households, accounting for 16.45%. Gia Lai strives to reduce the poverty rate according to the multidimensional poverty standard for the period 2022-2025 to 4.05% (down 2.02% compared to 2024); the poverty rate of ethnic minorities will decrease by 3%.
Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching. Ministries, branches and localities are focusing on developing plans to care for and support policy families, poor households and people in difficulty with the spirit of ensuring that everyone and every family has the conditions to enjoy spring and celebrate Tet according to the direction of the Central Party Secretariat in Directive No. 40-CT/TW. The Provincial People's Committee has also just issued Official Dispatch No. 2973/UBND-KGVX to deploy the movement "Charitable Tet" Spring At Ty 2025. Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee assigned the Provincial Red Cross Society to preside over the development of a plan, coordinate with the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, agencies, organizations, businesses and local philanthropists to implement the movement "Charitable Tet" Spring At Ty 2025 to ensure synchronization and unity in resource mobilization. Proactively advise the People's Committee at the same level to organize the meaningful and practical "Charitable Tet" movement for the Spring of At Ty 2025, contributing to helping families in difficult circumstances and vulnerable groups in the locality to have a warm and prosperous life during the traditional Tet holiday of the nation...
Poverty reduction is a major goal throughout our country's development journey. Thanks to prioritizing resources to help poor households, people in difficulty, and vulnerable groups, tens of millions of people have escaped poverty, the appearance of rural areas has increasingly improved, contributing to the implementation of the country's sustainable development goals and the country's construction in the period of innovation and international integration.
