Vietnamese military doctors treat women and children in South Sudan

On the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8), Vietnam's Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 conducted a volunteer trip to provide medical examination and treatment to women and girls in Bentiu town, Unity state, South Sudan.

On March 5, on the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8), Vietnam's Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5, in coordination with many individual officers from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) office block, Level 1 Hospital from the Mongolian Guard Battalion and local doctors, carried out a volunteer trip to examine and treat women and girls in Bentiu town, Unity state, South Sudan.

HOSPITAL PROVIDERS

Bentiu is the most difficult area in South Sudan, the situation here is always unstable due to the struggle for influence from military groups, many subjects need protection, especially ethnic minorities who are isolated due to ethnic, religious, political issues..., people in this area live almost entirely on subsidies from the United Nations. Among them, girls, the elderly and women are vulnerable groups, needing the most attention and protection. Director of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 Nguyen Ha Ngoc said that the unit has proactively proposed to other units and agencies in Bentiu sub-region, built a detailed plan with the focal points, to organize a volunteer trip. The trip was also supported and highly appreciated by the commander in the sub-region because this is the week of action for women and children on International Women's Day (March 8). The examination package deployed by Vietnam's Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 includes a general health examination and gynecological examination for about 50 women. People received general ultrasound, obstetric ultrasound, reproductive health consultation, advice on how to detect early abnormalities and common gynecological diseases, especially instructions on how to properly care for and clean gynecology for women. After the examination, the women were given 50 gifts including shirts, slippers, hats, feminine hygiene solutions, etc.

Doctors at the hospital also organized milk tea to invite local people and colleagues on the volunteer medical examination trip.

During the screening process, many diseases were discovered that the patients themselves did not know about, helping them have more information and further treatment. According to Dr. Huynh Thi Thanh Giang, the main person in charge of obstetric examination and consultation, the screening session discovered 2 cases of gallbladder stones and ureteral stones. In particular, one case of early pregnancy was discovered (the pregnant woman herself did not know she was pregnant), and one case of pregnancy progression monitoring was discovered. Both cases were scheduled for re-examination, detailed instructions, and recommendations for further treatment for the patients. Dr. Nguyen Ha Ngoc also informed that the patients, accompanying relatives, and local organizations highly appreciated the spirit and attitude of the Vietnamese doctors, especially the significance of the working trip of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5. Many local people were also excited to take photos with the hospital's doctors because it was the first time they had contact with and learned about the country and people of Vietnam through the examination team of Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5.
